2025 Leadership

We have had a pretty good run on the recruiting front so far and I trust that Richo and Benji have a few more presents for us fans.

Our team now the weapons in the middle of the park and on the edges to enable our attack. We have enough strike to make scoring points less of a challenge. We're probably a couple of players short of being able to blow teams off the park but we should be able to match it with them on the "for" side of the ledger.

The key to us getting up towards/into the eight is to take care of the embarassing "against" side of the ledger. Some of this will happen naturally due to our "kids" getting older and more accustomed to the grind, some through the players we have purchased, potentially a little through improved fitness.

The big change we need is in attitude - and changing attitude is all about leadership.

In the middle I think we are still a bit short. I really haven't seen in from Klem (maybe off the field) amd I'm not sure May is the answer here. Lead by example yes, but he doesn't come across as the man to inspire those around him. Api is a lead by example kind of guy, he doesn't come across the fella maintaining standards on and off the field (maybe he does off the field; I trust someone can fill in the blanks).

In the backs, Luai is a leader and does not accept below par efforts. We need more of that. I don't get a great vibe from Bula at the back though. Benji needs to unlock him on both sides of the ledger. He needs to be hanging around May and Hunt like a bad smell in the middle and pushing up in support of the edges of Luai and Galvin. If he is not showing leadership at the back - pehaps it is time for him to move to centre. I trust that Hodgo can bring this out in him. If not - what options doe we have with Taruva and Mason?

I'm not sure Benji got the team's or his laedership right last season; especially his approach to Spoon Bowl. He appears to be setting the tone this year though, issuing breach notices to those who aren't meeting agreed standards and punting Miller. I think he needs to get in the ear of some of our senior players and have them not only set standards, but not to walk past (accept) anything that is not up to par.

Is Api still the right guy to have the C beside his name?
Do we run a co-captain scheme; especially if Benji sees it like most of us and doesn't have Api punching out 80 mins week in week out?
How do Bird, Klemmer and Olam fit in, are they part of a leadership group?
What about May? Lead by example yes, but he doesn't come across as the man to inspire those around him.

My solution: Api (C), Luai (VC), Bula - Defensive Organisation, May/Seyfarth Linespeed. Spread the load a little and make it happen.

Thoughts?

Understand your point about a lack of leadership in the middle. How good would it be if Klem put some more meat on his frame and had a rebound year, putting fear into the opposition like he did in his day.

You would make a good leader Jolls. You have the essential quality of all good leaders..”optimism.”
When it comes to inspiring others ,there shouldn’t be anyone in the team void of this quality either.
I would pick a leadership group determined by the teams single most important function, “driving the direction of play”, driving the coach’s plan. To this end this group picks themselves by position. The 1, 6, 7, 9 and 13.
When the club hired a behavioural guru who recommended 5 captains, Nofa, being one of the captains, would need to run infield and shout over the crowd and other teammates Who looked unlikely to respond anyhow.
It was too funny 🤣

That would be the perfect solution, but is he up for it? I think the middle is what will make or break our 2025 season - line speed and attitude is key to stopping points being scored.

Api leads by example but he needs support in the middle to set the tone. JWH did not have C beside his name but he was a leader who could lift the side in Defence when required. I don't think May has that in his makeup and Klem has been dissapointing in that role. That is why I though Seyfarth might settle down if given a bit of a leadership role around the middle.

I agree with your point on Seyfarth as well. Give him some responsibility in the effort areas, he’s all heart.

We tried that with Bateman when we made him the VC.

I don't think 5 Captains is amywhere near a workable solution. Call me old school but on C and on VC is enough to make the decisions needed. I don't think it is too much of a stretch though for Benji to give some of our players an on field leadership role for certain aspects.

I just want you to do your job in Defence and that is to make your tackles and lead our line speed. If Benji has taken anything from Wayne he should be having those indivudual conversation with each layer and have them do one little leadership aspect on each side of the ball.

For Klem it is a simple job - dominate on both sides of the ball. If he can do that it mauy just earn him a 2026 extension. Fail to do so and he has tobe moved on.

Api is amazing, but I've heard a lot of comments that he is quiet. We need a talker and Jerome certainly doesn't shy away from that.

I'd say Api will be happy to hand captaincy over - Make him VC.

Api is the only player we have that has earned the right to call himself Captain.

Everyone else has slackened off.

Luai doesn't earn anything here for playing with Penrith.

If Captain changes, it is because someone hits Api's level. END! Lets get some standards.

I get you and agree; but I think he needs help. It may not be formal appointments but he isn't that verbal on field type Captain that directs things - he is a lead by example guy. I think Benji needs to step in and make his job easier by having guys lead aspects of the team - even if it is just done through one on one conversations.

And that is exactly how Luai can earn it... by stepping up and showing leadership, assisting Api....
