26 Weeks of Ups and Downs Leads to Execution

I’ve been involved in Rugby League for many years on and off the field and one thing I’ve learnt is every team has a bad day. I sometimes struggle with the structure of how we run the game in Australia in relation to crowning the REAL Champions and how little respect is shown to the best team over the whole year. In 2010, St George have proven to be the best team all year, but now they face the bigger challenge within this new competition which is virtually a knock-out competition. 1 ‘bad day’ see’s them as losers and undoubtedly, they will be branded Chockers again.

Sifting through the yearly sporting codes around the world, and you will find at the top of the list the English Premier League. The best team all year undoubtedly becomes the Champions. If you finish the season as the Number 1 Team, you remain the Number 1 Team. Then you shift your gaze across the globe to the American Style of sports. Best of 3 Finals and again, the best team becomes the Champion. Then you look at the Australian Sports, even the A-League has a do or die Grand Final, but they play the best of 2 Finals in the Semi’s. That I find completely weird???

Is our rugby league calendar too packed to ensure we find the Best Team? Can we look at shortening the season to accommodate a Best of Final Series, or can we just crown the best team over 26 weeks the Champions? Looking at our culture and the tribalism which is rugby league, I don’t think the second options would gain any merit.

I would like to see our Final Series as a Best of 3\. We shorten the competition to 24 Rounds, and create a best of 3 between the Top 4 Teams over 6 weeks. 1 vs. 4 & 2 vs. 3, both winners progressing to the Grand Final Series. If a team is up 2 nil after 2 weeks of the Semi Finals, they get the 3rd week off as a reward. This eliminates the Bad Day philosophy and ensures we get the Best Teams playing each other more.

Discussion or Ideas?

I agree with the sentiment but the NRL have done this to give as many fans as possible a chance to see their team have a chance at the title, in much the same way we have a top eight system so fans get to see their teams play finals football.

One suggestion would be to place FAR more importance on the monor premiership which is seriously undervalued by fans and commentators alike.

The NFL doesn't do best-of-three does it?

Problem with contact sports is you cannot play too many games in quick succession, and to do as you suggest makes the finals series excessively long.

Personally I think the finals series is an epic way to finish the year. Fair enough St George were clearly the best in 2010 regular season, but often it isn't so clear-cut and teams should be made to battle it out. In Premier League sometimes the lead side is so far ahead that it ends in anti-climax - but they also have mid-week local and international tournaments to satisfy the fans.

Everyone in League knows at year's open that it is 30 rounds to win it, so there are no illusions about what it takes to win. Perhaps it is the consistent threat of finals elimination that produces our best football, the most emotion and truly crowns the champion.

Can you imagine a best of 3 grand final? In the first game you pick your biggest dog players to try to cripple the opposition's playmakers. If you succeed (and manage to keep your playmakers), you cruise through the next 2 games.

The best solution I can come up with is to reward the minor premier more. Make the prize money something worth chasing. Give the team more recognition with other awards.

Other than that, I have no problem with the current structure.

Juro, I've never heard you so agressive before, but I like your thinking…

I'm not recommending it. I'm just saying that is what would happen…
