5th Tackle

I believe the Tigers biggest problem is the ineffective 5th tackle.
They have hardly got any repeat sets and seem to handover the ball to opposition without pressure being applied.
Brooks and Moses were very good exponents of getting the right result on 5th tackle coming through junior reps and NYC .Patience is wearing thin

Yes it's a very poor option,in theory its great but as we have witnessed if there are no chasers applying pressure the tactic is virtually a docile turnover, kicks to corners or the in goal would be more benificial to the team.

in the opposition 20, our 5th tackle options are horrendous, however, moses and brooks' long kicking game has been on point.

Taylor tactics. Bomb everytime to the corner. Usually uncontested.

Its stupid and ineffective and takes the pressure off every time

Brooks is good on the long kick when nothing's on, and he needs to bomb it long and high. <30m is a problem. Turning the ball over for nothing.

That's just about the most unfounded remark about the coaching as I have seen in here. The "bomb to the corner" tactic is rarely over used by the Tigers. Too often it's ineffectual short kicks.

I'm ok with bombing the ball. Those contests are 50/50 a lot of the time. It's when they are 5-10m from the try line & the short kick through either ends up in someones hands before the Tigers have even started chasing, the ball is kicked to Belmore, or the Brooks "kick into the legs" tactics that really let them down.

if just 25% of those plays could result in some repeat sets, the Tigers would be far more competitive.

They do not get very much practice at attacking 5th tackle kicks, more often than not its a mid field bomb because they have not made enough yards in there set to get to a attacking position or they have turned it over before the last. Although I do agree on the odd occasion they get then self in a real good position on the last the blow it was a very poorly placed kick, bomb or short kick

why is it ineffective? more often that not, we have to kick from inside our own half and we make the first tackle ~10-15m. it's overused and boring but it's still effective. what would be more effective is trying to find space between winger and fullback each time but only a couple of halves in the game can do that.

the bomb gives the chasers plenty of time to get there and form a line.

It's mostly ineffective as opponents are catching an easy bomb, 15-20m out from their own line and then making it up to the 30m line before they get tackled. They usually get a quick play the ball too further putting us on the back foot right from the start of the set. Giving away territory like it were nothing.

The idea as I understand it is to provide time for an effective chase that pins the catcher down with a wall of defence coming through. Sort of like a kick off hopes to achieve. And when it works it works well but often the kick isn't right or the chase is ineffective and/or someone misses a tackle. We're not the only team doing this.

I'm always a fan of mixing up with kicking on the 5th or 6th play, it just keeps the wingers guessing a bit. Also then there should be more open space for the long kick. We can keep the broncos outside backs honest if we run it on last plays also. It worked fairly well in rd 1_against the warriors.

I have no problem with the field position bomb. It's effective and we're good at it. It's not an attempt to regain possession, just keeping them down their end with no chance of a 20m restart.

The attacking kick is where we struggle.

i think the 5th tackle hail mary option is desperation.

they cant break the line, theyre buggered and have run out of options .

did see a couple of chip and chase from moses last week which is good variety- so keep up the different types of kicks.

 I like the idea of the bomb but I believe it should be put up around the goal posts
I think it would give us a 50/50 chance especially if it hits the post and comes back in our direction.
what do you guys think?

The idea is not to give away a 20 metre 7 tackle restart, so they wouldn't want to be too close to the posts.

Isn't it the 6th tackle option we're talking about…? i.e. what we do after the 5th tackle? I agree that it is a bit ad-hoc and clunky at best.

Yep - what he said. It's the higher percentage play. While a ball that stops deep in-goal is the best outcome, the chance it will go dead is very real and the 7 tackle punishment is too much for teams to bare. Yes it is boring and defensive and I don't like it but with the right chase it does hem teams in their own 20.

Anyone who has watched a tigers game live will realise how ineffective our mid field bombs are. what happened to turning the wingers around and kicking into space. Against the bulldogs we had so many chances in their 20m line and not once did we have a decent kick. Its probably our biggest problem at the moment.
