**THE COWBOYS are preparing to make Johnathan Thurston an offer that will make the Maroons halfback the richest player in the game.**
>
Sport Confidential has been told North Queensland are prepared to offer Thurston a staggering $700,000 a year, a deal which should stop the player rated as the best in the game from returning to the Bulldogs.
>
Cowboys CEO Peter Parr has been scouring North Queensland for third-party sponsors and has all but secured the deal that will be offered to Thurston during the off-season.
>
"I am pretty confident we'll come up with a deal that will be very hard to match," Parr said.

"We are not going to talk to the end of the season, but it will be an offer which will take some topping.
>
"We are confident he will stay. We have been given no indication that he will go anywhere if the package is right.

"I think we have done a better job on third parties than most and we will continue to look after him."

The Bulldogs have shown interest in bringing Thurston back to Belmore when Brett Kimmorley retires in 2011, but we hear the halfback is happy in Townsville - and he will be even happier when the Cowboys show him the money .

$700,000 a season… Sorry, can't justify that for ANY player imo.

The amount he contributes to the Cows he probably is worth it. But, if they based his salary on that he'd be on 3 million, he IS North Queensland.

Certainly a fair chunk of the salary cap to have sitting on the sidelines if he goes down injured!

But look at how they perform without him. Could they really risk losing him?

Thats true but they would have $700,000 to fix that problem…

No way is any player worth that coin…It's Rugby League for goodness sake....I do not think any other club could afford to come close to that...

If NQLD are prepared to pay that sort of coin for him, then good luck to Thurston, he can lead a life of luxury in Townsville. I'd like to know how they plan on structuring the rest of the side around him. You would think they would have trouble bringing in any further marquee players.

Fair enough, but you can't deny the impact he has on that side.

do we really think any player is worth that amount of money, in the NRL. :unamused:
.

Clearly our players ARE worth that match. Thurston could find that price in Union methinks. Up the Salary cap team NRL, do something.

It is probably fair to say that no other NRL club would be able to offer better than that. A lot of money for one player.

If there was no cap, then maybe that is justifiable. With the cap as it is at the moment, all this does is lock the Cowboys in as a one-player team. As others have concluded, this can be okay if he is fit, but if he is injured they are going to look very foolish.

If there was no cap he would be at the Roo$ter$ on $8,200,000 a season along with the rest of the Aussie team

So let's not hear any more complaints about the cap then, okay?

They probably could keep him for $400,000… It looks like they will pay overs for him.

They were pretty scared about the Bulldogs targetting getting him back, and if he wants a premiership badly then the Dogs would be a very attractive place to go, you are correct though, $700,000 is well and truely overs, for any player.

how much is he on now? i would think $500,000 would be the maximum any club would pay for a player because of the salary cap.
