I was 14\. In 88 it was great to just be in the GF, but although I was only a kid I knew that a great opportunity was lost in 89\. Bad bad day for me, lucky it was school holidays coz I didn't leave my room til Wednesday.

Geez do we have to bring back those bad memories?

The game was a tragedy, Balmain NEVER recovered, ripped the soul out of the Tigers in fact.

Best forgotten about!!

I thought Allan Jones did that!

hurts to much i was 24 and that was the day all balmain tigers fans were shattered , will never forget it , but wests tigers have brought the passion back , i will never forgat balmain tigers as a team in the top grade due to supporting them from around 5 or 6 , a lot off people on here may be to young to remembers them , but they were tigers just like our wests tigers , same would be said from our western suburbs supporters , fond memories

I was going for balmain that day, as they were the sydney team …watching from Belmore pub, dont remember much

innsane , your memory is good , mine and a lot of others burns with the pain from that day , wish i was in a pub and started having a few at 7 am that day , would ease the pain i think

Watched the 89 GF from the Tangalooma ferry had just spent the weekend at Moreton Island Seeing I wasn't a Balmain fan and the Canberra Raiders could almost be known as the Qld\NZ Raiders …........

I'll leave the rest I don't want to be strung up by the lynch mob 😱pen_mouth:

I have wondered if things would have been different had we won that day, I reckon they may have been a little different. Maybe Wok would have stayed after 1990?

I have never watched the game since, just can't do it.

My local club had to pull out of the comp in 1989, my father died in 1989 and the Tigers lost the game they should have won in 1989, that year was a very bad year for me personally and I don't know which one hurt more.
I have watched the game since, Show pony referee Bill Harrigan had a big bearing on the result with a howler of a penalty against Bruce McGuire, but how come noted defender Kevin Hardwick couldn't tackle John Ferguson.

Why would you want to do that to yourself? I've never been able to watch the whole game, just bits and pieces. If you get a copy erase the final 10 minutes at least. Bill Harrigan absolutely stitched us up that day and if you're reading this Bill I'm happy to repeat that in court mate - I know how sensitive he is about this but christ when has anyone before or since been penalised for using an opponent as a shepherd? The bloke is a clown…

It was a tragic result for Balmain, but if you can bare to objectively watch the match again, you will actually see that Balmain was lucky to lead 14-2 at half time (intercept and & freak bounce). I never realised how good that Canberra pack was until I watched a replay of this match a few months back.

Best Grand Final ever. (I was a Western Suburbs supportive so I can be objective about the game)

Both teams have great players including Big Mal, Laurie daley, Ricky Stewart, Brick with Ears, Steve Walters, Bradley Clyde etc, Garry Jack, Timmy Brasher, Roach, Sironen and Pearce.

Gary is correct the first 2 tries Balmain scored were against the run of play and bombed a few chances to win the game.

Both teams have great packs.

I have been watching rugby league since 1977 and the Canberra Raiders side of the laste 80's early 90's was the best club side I have ever seen. When they were on song no one could complete with them. They won grand finals in 1989, 1990 and 1994 and runner up in 1987 and 1991\. Brillant stats.

gary yes we had a lucky bounce mate but we also had alot of bad luck with dodgy calls and near misses also …some would say we got rorted that day.thanks bill harrigan.

Canberra were a great side back then like us....in the end i think canberra were very lucky and the players agree when they have been interviewed about it.

Balmain were the better team on the day...

I was only 7 when it was on, and don't remember it all that well - I have seen all the highlights (and lowlights) of course… :frowning:

I know we got our hearts ripped out, but i've never seen it in its entirety, and would like to see it.

If anyone is able to lend it or share it, you would have my eternal appreciation.
