A big Thank You to the club

I know we have a lot to complain about at the moment given the current state of the club both on and off the field, i just want to take a moment to share something positive.

2 months ago my girlfriends little brother (he's 15) broke his neck on a trampoline. Broke vertebrae's 3 and 4\. He was in Westmead Children's hospital for 2 weeks, had surgery and was in a neck brace for a month. He got very lucky, it could have ended the same way it did for Alex McKinnon or Christopher Reeve. Maybe even worse. He's out of the brace now and is expected to make a full recovery which is great.

Anyway, he's a Tigers fan, so i had the idea to contact the club. I got in contact with them and they told me they would pass my details onto the community team, but warned me they had a backlog of requests. The very next day i got call from Shaun Spence. Shaun asked me how he was going and told me he could arrange a signed jersey. He asked for my email so we could stay in contact. I thanked him and hung up. He emailed me straight away and told me he thought it could be a possibility that we could bring my girlfriends brother to training. At this point he was still in hospital recovering from surgery. A week or two goes by and we make contact again. By this time he's in a brace, house bound for the next 6 weeks. I told Shaun that he would be unable to visit training. Shaun told me to contact him when he could.

A couple weeks goes by, the brace comes off and i go to email him back. As i did Shaun had emailed me two days earlier asking if the club could do anything. I asked if the visit to training was still a possibility and he said it was. It was hard for the girlfriend and i to agree on a day during the week with work, so i figured they would most likely train the day before the Storm game. So i asked Shaun if Saturday was doable. He got back to me today and said it was, now come Saturday my girlfriend and i will be taking her little brother to Leichhardt oval to watch the boys train.

I just want to thank Shaun Spence. He's gone above and beyond.

Note: Word to the wise, if Ted somehow mysteriously pulls out of Sundays game, my girlfriend fawning all over him had absolutely nothing to do with it.

So why do some of our members continually bag our club, what a great story, where are you Rebecca Wilson, how about it Phil Rothfield, without a hint of sarcasm this is truly worthy of a story in RLW or the Telegraph at least.

To both you GNR and Sean Spence , you are both class acts

Well done to all parties involved

Tell Teddy to have a shave , its slowing him down too much

Glad to hear the young fella is on the mend, and good to hear the club not only put the time into getting in contact with you, but they didnt let it fall by the way-side by following it up.

Undoubtedly you will pass on your own grattitude, but do me a favour and pass on a thanks from all of us, letting them know that they probably do alot of work like this we dont realise that they are, and we are greatful that they do!

All the best for the young bloke.

Great stuff GNR and Wests Tigers…often these stories really give some perspctive...

Shaun is great in his role...

Get the young fella to Tell Brooksy to run more...

GNR that is a brilliant story - I am sure everyone on the Forum appreciates you sharing this with us.

Real glad the young bloke is almost there with a total recovery - as you say it could have been horrific.

With all the bad vibes on here at the moment with regards the Tigers and all the negativity - it is good that Shaun Spence and the Tigers can do real positive things for the community, and I am sure it is much more that we hear about via the Official site.

You certainly don't hear about this kind of stuff in the press or on TV.

All the best to the young Tiger GNR - get well soon.

Thanks guys.

I looked in to Shaun after i made contact with him. A shame his career came to an early end. Only 24 yrs old.

Sounds like his new career started at 24 and he is very good at it by all reports

Its great to see amid all the doom and gloom that there are people within the club doing a good thing.Well done to all involved and happy the young bloke is going ok

Out here waiting for the boys to emerge. First thing I can report is Ballin was out by himself doing some running drills and looks to be running at full speed.

Nice to hear your g/f bro is on the mend…. Good work gnrs and WTs.
Sean Spence is a good bloke

Was a good move hiring Spence once he retired. He isnt an ex footbalker looking for a free ride, he's an injury prone player who never got to realise his ambitions on the field but will relish the chance to stay involved in the game he loves off the field.
