A vid for the old maggie fans

Brings back memories and I think I might have been at this match but only 9 years old.

Loved the Western Suburbs Magpies however I am a proud Wests Tigers fan.

good pack that year -

John Donnelly, Ray Brown, Bruce Gibbs,
Les Boyd, Bob Cooper & Graham O'Grady.
Hartley ripped us off that year -
ruled Graham O'Grady off side from his own kick that he scored from against Manly in the final.
What crap.
Should of been Wests & Cronulla in the grand final but we were robbed just like we were robbed in St. Georges rein of 12 premierships in a row.
Hartley should be in gaol.

history repeats itself to a lesser extent in 2010 when Tuqiri gets kneed in the back by Jeremy Smith & the ref takes no action.
No penalty kick for goal to secure grand final birth against the Roosters.

i dont blame Manly but solely Hartley.
He made that terrible decision that changed the course of history.
Disgusting.
Now i have an awful taste in my mouth.

I think my dislike of manly revolves around how, in the 70's and 80's they seemed to get " special treatment" when there players fronted the judiciary, and topped it off when Boyd, Brown & Dorahy were signed by them.
I know I should let it go. been well over 30 years since then.
it's not like I am carrying a grudge

First, many thanks for the link Simon, it brought back happy memories.

Second AHX, I hope you don't mind if I add 1963 to your list - possibly the most egregious example of a rip-off in our game. I have mentioned this before in a previous post and so won't go into the particulars here. Suffice to say that the Magpies were robbed of a premiership by a crooked referee.

I often think of those magpie teams of the late 1970s when I read on this forum that our current team should display more 'mongrel'. The magpies of that era had mongrel to spare but were ultimately unsuccessful.

They won the minor premiership in 1978 but lost both semi-finals in which they appeared.

They came fourth in 1979 and lost comfortably to Canterbury in their only semi-final appearance.

Notwithstanding the role Hartley played in 1978, I think the Magpies limitations were exposed in the three semifinals in which they appeared in those years.

What it demonstrated to me was that a knock-em-down-drag-em-out style of play can get you to the semi's but once you are there, you can't simply intimidate your way to a grand final. You need more than toughness, you also need finesse. And, unfortunately, the magpies of that era were long on toughness, but short on finesse.

The thing I learned from that era is that mongrel is not enough.

Cheers

What a matchup!

was just waiting for the match when dallas missed hitting a manly player in a melee and "accidentally" got Hartley.
