Amateur hour

Is there any other club in the NRL, maybe Parramatta aside, where the entire club is run though the media?

Why, again, is the running of the club, the future of Potter, the players being unhappy, the Brian Smith report etc. etc. being played out in the media?

Why isn't this all happening behind closed doors?

Totally embarrassing. Unprofessional. Amateur.

Yep , I thought the amateur hour days were gone once sheens and Marshall left the scene . So sick of all this crap !

Totally agree..Clearly someone in the organisation likes to play matters out in the media…The Brian Smith report should've focused on internal communications, governance and risk management. These internal issues are far more detrimental to the club than a coach who doesn't blow smoke up players backsides. The buck stops with Mayer and he should receive a fail as he has failed to address this leaking boat.

Happens everywhere it's not just the Tigers. You can't tell me that other clubs have not had their fair share of dramas played out in the media. What about Newcastle with Bennett, Dragons with Price, Broncos with the salary cap.

I don't wanna criticize him too much cos he's done a good job at retaining half the squad over the last 8 or 9 months, but its a little odd. Its almost like he's doing it to appease all the supporters who whinge about the club not making decisions fast enough to their liking. He doesn't owe the supporters anything in regards to meeting a deadline regarding his decisions, nor is it in his job description to have to justify himself to them. He came out a couple times making statements when they were trying to re-sign Tedesco cos a few whinging supporters on social media were demanding a time frame. Say what you like about Humpty, but he never aired anything in the public till he announced something officially. Not with the Blair negotiations which went on for longer than Tedesco's, and not when the writing was on the wall right before Sheens got sacked. He didn't worry about the demands of a few self entitled supporters on Twitter.

Good comment. That said, it is good to see a CEO engage with supporters for a change rather than provide the same useless rhetoric.

In regard to the coaching job, it's a funny one. If Potter was indeed a dead man walking surely the club would have almost certainly fronted up with a "full support of the board" statement by now?

Agree with both of you.

At least by putting out statements he is questioning the validity of what is being said in the media.

Complain all you want about his honesty but wouldn't it be worse if the media wrote whatever they want (which they are doing now) and he didn't make any comment at all!?

As for the leaks in the club, well, most of what's reported is in the DT. The only Tiger I can remember on the front page of their paper consistently is Elias. Whether it's about a club in Perth or positive quotes attributed to him earlier this year about how well we were playing. Funny his name is never quoted when the negatives arise.

Mayer can't win!!! People complain when no information comes from the club, and complain when some info comes from the club. An article appears in some dodgy newspaper, and instead of sitting back he responds with a statement explaining the clubs position. Yeah, he didn't give too much away, but he did respond. I'm actually glad he is more active in engaging with supporters.

And as for leaks, journos are looking for any rubbish angle, and are not beyond fabricating stories based on the old "I heard it from a mate who is the uncle of a bloke who works for the company that makes the ballboys socks" kinda whispers. Every club cops it, not just ours.

Sums it up for me…and surprisingly, this is from the Tele....

**The Crawley Files: As Wests Tigers wear down yet another coach, where will they turn to next?**

Paul Crawley
The Daily Telegraph
July 18, 201412:00AM

THE Wests Tigers should make Robbie Farah their captain-coach for next season and be done with it.

That way the Tigers players would have nothing more to complain about and could instead get on with their job of playing football.

It seems no coach is good enough for this club.

A couple of years back Tim Sheens got sacked after losing the support of the players — now Mick Potter is in the firing line because, apparently, he is too nice a bloke.

Shoot him for that.

After The Daily Telegraph revealed this week that Potter would only be guaranteed a contract extension in 2015 if the Tigers made the top eight, it has now emerged that there is again a player-led revolt to try and get Potter’s assistant Todd Payten the top job.

An unnamed player was quoted in Rugby League Week saying: “Mick is a good bloke and everyone at the club likes and respects him. But Todd and (fellow assistant coach) David Kidwell do most of the hands-on coaching and they are the ones who really run the team. It’s nothing against Mick but the players just feel Todd would do a better job and be the best choice for the club going forward.”

Nothing against Mick?

Let’s be fair dinkum here, there is plenty going on behind the scenes to undermine Potter’s power, and it has been going on since the day he arrived.

The entire time Potter has refused to play the game out in public.

When we spoke to Potter earlier this week about not being offered a new deal he was his usual respectful self. He didn’t shoot bullets at the board or any players, on or off the record.

“I know that the team and the club are on the way up,” he said.

Asked if he was disappointed he had not been offered a new deal, Potter added: “I understand the situation with where the board is at in a transition. I will just let it take its course and hopefully it takes the right one.”.

Club boss Grant Mayer told me this week that Potter’s future had been put on hold as the club awaits the appointment of a new board, which should be in place by the end of the month.

But it still makes you wonder what on earth is going on at this club.

This week Sheens was inexplicably not invited to the club’s 15-year celebration and naming of their greatest ever team.

Sheens was the club’s longest-serving coach who led them to grand final glory in 2005.

But he is now locked in a legal fight with the club with the case due in court in December as Sheens pursues damages.

Even so, Sheens should have been invited. Sheens told the Telegraph that he only found out about the “celebration” on the night when some former players started sending him text messages, asking why he wasn’t at the function.

Tim Sheens led the club to a grand final victory yet wasn’t invited to a recent celebration.

And this raises another point relating back to Potter. Given the Tigers’ financial struggles, it is not as if they have the money to go out and pay top dollar for a supercoach like Wayne Bennett.

Potter is currently the lowest paid coach in the NRL, on about $250,000 a year, and he has done an outstanding job.

Despite the Tigers starting this season as the TAB’s $3 wooden spoon favourites, they go into Sunday’s game against the Bulldogs still in the hunt for the finals.

One of five teams on 20 competition points, they are equal with the Broncos, Storm, Dragons and Eels, with only points differential separating those teams.

And don’t forget the significant injuries the Tigers have had to contend with this year.

Farah was out injured for an extended period and also missing at vital times during Origin along with Aaron Woods. James Tedesco is gone, Liam Fulton and Braith Anasta have retired mid-season. Now David Nofoaluma is gone.

At different stages the Tigers have also been without Chris Lawrence and Tim Simona.

But on their day they have proved they are good enough to beat any team, having scored memorable wins over Souths and Manly.

And what part of their rebuilding should be contributed to the coach?

Let’s be straight on this: players don’t change culture, coaches do.

Only recently the club employed Brian Smith to come in and do a review of the coaching structure and it is speculated that review wasn’t particularly supportive of Potter.

Does that surprise anyone?

Seriously, asking for a review like this was like pointing a gun at Potter’s head.

When Potter arrived the joint was in turmoil but he had the guts to make some extremely tough calls.

He made the decision last year to drop Benji Marshall — and while it created a hell of an uproar at the time who would argue now it wasn’t the right call given the promise of Luke Brooks? Benji Marshall’s departure caused controversy — but now looks to be a wise decision.

The club has done itself no favours by dragging on Potter’s contract negotiations for months. What this does is erode the coach’s power. Players start thinking if we don’t perform, we have a ready-made excuse.

The player quoted in League Week added: “The team has lost its way and we feel we need a different voice to get the best out of us.”

Sure, it is important at any club that the players get on with the coach — but it is equally important they also know their place.

Like the great Jack Gibson once famously said: winning starts in the front office.

Let’s hope when the new board finally takes control it gives power back to the coach.

By giving players too much say you get what the Tigers have today; an ongoing problem that a change of coach won’t fix.

A lot of that article has merit except for the Sheens sympathizing. It had been over 10 yrs and it was time for someone to breathe some fresh air into the place. Sheens is a media darling though, so don't ever expect them to justify WT's decision there.

Like I said the issue in the WT is not Potter but the constant leaks…until the clubs sorts these issues out we are going nowhere on the ladder....Mayer should find out who the alleged player is and sack him as an example to the rest of them...and it would not surprise if his initials are RF

I support not inviting Tim Sheens to the celebration with the legal action pending, you can't just turn that off and have club affiliates mingling with the guy suing the club.

As soon as Sheens decided to take legal action, the club had no option but to absolutely sever all official ties with him until such a time as a resolution is reached.

In regard to this being played out in the media - agreed it is unfortunate but it's an aspect of the game, it's not just Tigers. Already mentioned - Parra board, Broncos salary cap, Knights coaching and ownership, then Cronulla and ASADA/coach crap, Manly board battles last decade, Bulldogs turfing their coaches / salary cap, Melbourne salary cap, Dragons coaching job, Souths ownership.

Basically if there is a story in it, the media is interested. Also, if you are struggling on the field, it is easier to make news, there are more disgruntled club figures and more external pressure on these club figures. Hardly any negative stories come out of clubs who are winning competitions.

The other thing to keep in mind is that unlike most employees, professional footballers are high-profile, have more say in their business and have more avenues available for addressing the perceived negatives of their employment. Many of them also have big egos, or a formal media presence, so aren't afraid of heating up a bit of a media circus. And papers are not afraid to quote un-named sources.

Imagine if you didn't entirely like your boss, your performance was below target and you were being heavily scrutinised on a weekly basis. If the opportunity arose to deflect some attention onto your boss or other person, would you turn it down? You only need one player to say "yes" to that and you get the beginnings of a stir.

I like Mayer's frankness, and he usually responds to media frenzy rather than instigating it. I can think of the circus about CSS crowds that he kicked off, but it did result in a significant crowd the next time around. His email this week about Sheens, Potter and media speculation gave a frank update to fans about what was going on.

In fact, in light of a media circus when you are never sure what is true, rumour, innuendo, people "in the know" on the forum, it's nice to have a fairly straight-shooting response from the club to settle the boat.

So they want a different voice but they want the coach replaced by the guy who has been the voice all year and "the most hands on"

The petulant children have come back it seems.

FTR Robbie Farah's opinion on coaches should count for zero. He rates Ricky Stuart FFS

Was just saying the same thing. Great article, however his comments on Sheens ruined it.

90% of the stuff we get through the media has been created by some so called jurno to fill space and sell papers, it usually far removed from the actual truth. The trouble once these things start rolling is they get bigger and bigger and further away from the real situation and they end up doing a lot of damage.

What ever is going on within the club at present should have been acted upon swiftly and behind closed doors. Their are some things the world need to know and other things that the world dosnt need to know.

Once again the club has taken a hit and the buck stops with Mayer, he has to take control of the situation quickly and stop this from being a annual thing, because at present we must look like a two bob circus to anyone who might have thoughts about joining the club, in that I mean sponsors, players and punters.

My quick fix get a hold of Penriths business model and implement, not sure where you will find a Gould and a Cleary but they must be out their!!!!!!!!!!

I agree it is not inexplicable that Tim Sheens wasn't invited, considering he is SUING THE CLUB. Makes me wonder though if they did name a coach for the greatest ever Wests Tigers team, it's not like we have actually had that many. Did they name Wayne Pearce?

Sheens and Marshall may have left but the person that was leaking confidential information in the Sheens era is still there doing the same thing in the Potter era.

Who's left from the Sheens era ? Not hard to work out.
