An Ode to 6pm Friday games

It's late on a Friday and time for a schooner
But the boss pops into work like some kind of loser
The clown wants to check that I haven't clocked off
Looks like I'll miss the 6pm kick-off

Even when I clock off, I miss the first half
My work mates hate footy, so they have a good laugh
Will Ronnie Palmers magic dust ever inspire?
I don't care, the look on my face is full Michael Maguire

Who's home early on a Friday night?
If you said retirees and school teachers, I reckon you're right
The sort of people who fall asleep after a couple of shandies
Please scrap the 6pm games, Peter Vlandys.

As someone who lives in NZ, me too. I used to hate waiting until 10pm to see footy. Now I get it from 8pm! But yeah, probably not great for people anywhere else.

Is league getting to be as popular as union in NZ?

Depends how well the Warriors are going. It was steadily growing in popularity until covid. Not sure what's up now. The Warriors get brought up in my circles quite a bit. Nothing much else league-related.

It's still really only a big-city sport. You have to live in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch if you want to play at either a serious or social level. Other places have competitions, but normally only one grade, so the skill levels are all over the place. Unsure what its status is in schools.

Something interesting about schools is that at lunchtimes everyone played league, no one played union (even if it was only touch). Most school union players were also into league, at least at my school. It was way easier to organise and people who didn't play rugby could easily join and pick the game up.

The grassroots levels are good in the cities I mentioned, but everywhere else it is basically non-existent. A lot of good union players come from outside those regions, so until league can expand its presence outside of places, it will remain a somewhat-minority sport in NZ. In contrast, most rural towns have a union team you can join. E.g. in the grade I used to play, we had 3 country teams which were anywhere from 30-90 minutes drive from the city.

I'm one of those retirees you mentioned in your cleverly written plea, but I dont have Fox Sport, so any game not on free to air I get on ABC Grandstand.
If you've got a mullet just pull it over the ear that has the earpiece and add hairspray to keep the hair in place.
I'm sure your boss wouldn't notice anything unusual

I’m home 1pm every day,but my kids are frying out till like 7:30,that’s why I prefer the 8’oclock kick off.

My favourite game day is Thursday - followed by Friday.

Less chance of having other commitments I have to try and get out of.

Here's one better...

It's Friday night and we chillin on the forum
Games sold out and it's still kinda boring
15 minutes to go and the coach brings on shawn blore'nd Moses Mbye chillin In the 6 and he's snorin
@hobbo1 on the tinnys just finished a big jobbo, painting @Spartan117's mansion, guest house and personal grotto, painting perfection and that's his motto.
@Milky on the bender and he's getting real filthy, couple of the vodka redbullz got him all tilty, bouncing of the walls like @TheDaBoss but @Kul said he's not guilty.
@innsaneink is smashing the long necks hasn't cracked out the Hong kongs yet but he's a true blue bogan and hasn't heard the eye of the tiger song yet.
80 mins deep and we're facing defeat,
Same old Friday tigers game, all the *cool guys* at the pre game meet.
Listening to @geo tell some stories with pepperoni between his teeth..
Waiting for the ebbs and flows pre game speech.
Only the real go to bed, so enraged we can't sleep...

Wake up the next day, 3 2 1s posting.
@happy_tiger ready for a roasting.
Same usual folks with the told u so's, boasting.
Only the strong survivor wheb you're swimming with sharks in the ocean !!!

I'm sick of having to drink like Dougie Walters to "get in the mood" in the 40 minutes between getting home and kick off.

It’s a great time slot. Get home and only have to wait half an hour for the first. Not the greatest time slot if you are looking to go though. Can be a bit tricky.

Plus you get the unpleasantness of our game out of the way early.
