Another Bunji Marshall headline

A rejuvenated Benji Marshall has been leading the way at pre-season training with the Dragons and believes he can get back to his brilliant best next year.

Marshall, who has put his hand up to play in the Auckland Nines, said he was benefiting from his first full off-season since before the 2008 World Cup and a change in attitude after leaving Wests Tigers last year to play rugby union with the Blues.

The 29-year-old said he had been pushing himself harder than he had since becoming one of the game's superstars and had regained his speed and sharpness.

"This is probably the fittest I have been in five or six years," Marshall said. "There was a time when I was just happy being in the middle of the pack doing fitness and now I am out the front so it is a big difference.

"At the Tigers I was just playing to be with my mates but now that I have come back I have to prove myself again. I want to be the best again and that is probably the difference.

"I was just happy playing with my mates at the Tigers and not trying to be the best, whereas all my life growing up I always wanted to be the best.

"I lost that for a couple of years but going away and coming back I have found that again and I have got a lot to prove."

The St George Illawarra playmaker also admits he became too involved in issues such as player retention and recruitment at the Tigers, and because of his standing at the club, his standards were allowed to slip.

However, he was grateful to Dragons coach Paul McGregor for telling him some home truths after taking over the reigns from Steve Price just a week after Marshall joined the club last May.

"I just felt like I didn't have that honesty at the Tigers to challenge me and tell me that I was too overweight or being too lazy," Marshall said. "I just didn't get that in the last few years at the Tigers, whereas now Mary tells me the truth and I think it has helped me.

"I didn't know any different and when I was at the Tigers I just got too comfortable in that position but when you have to go to another club and prove yourself again, you feel like you have to step up."

After changing his body shape and trying to learn new skills for rugby union, Marshall admits he was "confused" when he returned to the NRL and had started "shakily" with the Dragons but his form and combination with England five-eighth Gareth Widdop improved as the season went on.

He has regained his speed and while the former New Zealand captain admits he can no longer do the same things as when he led the Tigers to the 2005 premiership, Marshall said he had not lost his skills and was now more experienced.

"When I made my debut [in 2003], I was 76kg and I was stepping from one side of the field to the other. Those movements are different now, obviously with my body changing shape and size, but it doesn't mean I can't do no-look passes or anything like that because there were a few games last year where there was nothing to lose and I pulled a few things off," he said.

"I am the halfback, so I need to be in control of the game and lead by example but if I see something I am still going to do it."

Acknowledging the "frustration" of St George Illawarra fans over the loss of Brett Morris to Canterbury next season, Marshall said the squad "still feels really strong" and from what he had seen at training so far the Dragons were "definitely a top-eight team".

However, Marshall said he was happy to leave the recruitment issues to the club and just wanted to focus on preparing as well as he could for a big season next year.

"I got a little bit too worried when I was at the Tigers about who was coming and going. Now I am here, I have just got to do my job and I am feeling great," he said.

"I am feeling sharper than I have ever felt and I have got a bit of speed back. [Dragons head of strength and conditioning] Ciriaco Mescia has come on board and he has relayed a lot of training to footy-specific fitness and speed, and I feel like I have got it back a bit."

Where does this guy get off?

I take it he doesn't read this forum.

I find it interesting listening to Marshall over the last few years. No matter what the subject and even when he is putting his hand up to say he should have been better; he always manages to slip in a comment that suggests other people were at fault. He's a professional athlete getting paid big money to be a professional athlete; he shouldn't need someone to make him work harder. That's the excuse ex-second graders burp out at the pub late at night when telling anyone who will listen the reasons that they 'didn't make it'.

Another classic Benji pre season press release. He's gotta be in the NRLs top 5 people looking to create headlines. There is always so much content and bold statements that get people talking.
My personal fav was how he insinuated that nobody told him he was overweight and lazy.
The sentence about being a half back that needs to control the game is getting boring. He uses that every second year. Then if that isn't working he'll bring out the line of playing his natural running game. Anyway good read for old time sake .

At least he has confirmed there was a "boys" club at the tigers. He got involved with who was coming and going. Nothing about the money he was on though that saw players having to leave.

Oh, the same is happening at Saints. Morris and Merrin leaving because Benji is on a heavily backloaded contract.

Well if I was getting paid a huge salary and not putting in 100percent,I'm pretty sure my employer would of shown me the door very quickly..

To let a player get involved in recruitment and give his opinion on a regular basis when you have a recruitment Manager,is poor form shown by admin…

No wonder the WTs have been a basket case for so long....

Hopefully this and other practices have ceased, and the club can go forward..... :unamused:

He should be thankful to the Tigers for showing him the door.
And getting his career back on track.

Snapper,I don't think he expected the WTs to show him the door…

But now they have it has been a huge wake up call, hence the change in attitude.....

Benji has always been a publicity magnet, this is not something of his own making. If anything, he is too honest or naive in these interviews, where most players these days just trot out the usual NRL approved meaningless phrases.

Personally, I prefer a player to say what he really thinks and answer the questions put to him. Most of what Benji says is self-critical.

If you've read the thread on the first round of the 1915 comp, you'll know that the NRL wanted to play St George vs the Tigers in round 1 for the sole reason that it would be Benji against his old club. That's how big he still is in terms of publicity. The NRL believes that people who support neither Saints nor the Tigers will watch the game to see Benji v the Tigers.

I still hope he does well in the future.

He got the shits when potter dropped him and his attitude did not change 1 bit the useless piece of shit I don't give s flying you no what about Bunji he is the same as Blair all talk in the off season zero effect in the season hey Bunji come get your injury prone mate motzen please

yeah and everyone could see that

and because of his standing at the club, his standards were allowed to slip.

and then he cracks the ….. when he got dropped, he wasn't interested when he was told his standards had slipped.

It appears Potter was the only person who was honest with him and he couldn't handle it. I believe these are his true thoughts, I just can't believe he's that dumb to make them public. I truly thought he was smarter than this.

Funny how times change from 2005 till 2012/3ish..hardly a bad word was ever spoken about Benji…if it was it was howled down by the majority of the forum....now it seems Benji is friendless..

I'm a fan of his and will be forever appreciate what he brought to the Wests Tigers....He has now moved on ...maybe we should as well

To call him a piece of shit is outrageous. My dealings with him and seeing first hand some of the behind the scenes charity work showed he's quality. His brutal self assessment shows his honesty. He may have not been at his best in his latter years due to various reasons but he still did a lot of wonderful things for this club. You only had to go to a training session and see the hundred kids lined up to get ONE players autograph to realise the significance he had.

I know in the early days, he was worth everything he was played, when he was on the field.
Now, he is being honest and admitting he was just going through he motions for the last two years, did he offer to repay the money he was OVERPAID?

I think the main problem with benjis form drop was due to him bulking up after his shoulder recons. He lost his explosiveness and speed/step. He then tried to change his game from a ball runner 5/8 to a play making 1/2 back. He went from producing one or two bits of brilliance per game to touching the ball 3 times per set. This has never been his strength. Prince played that role when we were at our best. Unfortunately I think rowdy has a similar problem regarding sze/speed
