Another sad day for Australia

A gunman posing as an Afghan soldier has shot 5 Aussie soldiers, killing 3 of them.

We have been over in god's sewer for more than 10 years now, with some regiments clocking up over 15\. Very little has changed. My condolences to the families and friends of these brave men and my thoughts go out to all still involved with this attrocious campaign.

That is very alarming to hear. Prayers and thoughts go out to friends and family of the soldiers. Much respect to these soldiers who do their part every day in fighting for our country.

To add to those 5 attacked, 2 more Aussie special forces boys were killed in a helicopter crash

Sad day for this country

My thoughts go out to their family…
But the question to be asked is if we are not over there who will protect the Innocent like woman and children? As much as i don't like the fact our boys are on the other side of the world. They are there doing a important role and god bless every one of them and bring them home safely.

Warfare has changed so much

It wasn't that long ago that you knew who your enemy was

Now every man ,woman and child that walks past is a potential threat

These guys are amazing , I don't know if I could cope with that

My condolences to all of the soldiers family and friends RIP you brave souls

Thank you for keeping my family and friends safe for another day

You are right, however there are 20+ other countries in the world where right at this moment, worse attrocities are being inflicted upon the innocent. I dont know what the answer is but I do have some knowledge of the middle east and the place is not far from being a lost cause. I will refrain my thoughts as I haven't been there for 5 years but we are making the best and brightest of our military live over in attrocious conditions, fighting a cowardly enemy who routinely use these innocents against us where we are losing some of the best soldiers we have….and for what?

As Watto said. Just bring them home.

Look at the state of Central Africa, we must do everything we can to prevent the Middle East from heading down the same path. Like you I do not have the answers but I feel that if we pull our troops out we can't pull out resources with them, the most obvious path seems to be empowering the local authorities but as the attack on our troops highlights this is incredibly difficult

you cant fix a religious mess , time to get out , we should never have been there in the first place , going there only brings the sh#ty things here , get with it , sending our people there only leave blood on peoples hands , vietnam ring a bell . you cant win this thing

My thoughts and well wishes go out to the family and friends that have lost their father, son, husband, lover, brother, uncle, cousin, and best mates in this senseless conflict over the years, i understand what you must be going through, ive been there.

That's the horrible thing about this Moltz92 and the biggest thing people need to get their heads around. I dont want to take a shot at you for what you said but just talk about your statement in a general way. What you just said, although the sentiment was intended as good natured i find it appalling people think this way. It simply isn't true. Ive lost a great mate, a brother of mine due to war and have a greater insight into this mess then some replies on here. I lived in the Middle East between 2005 - 2008\. I traveled extensively through Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Pakistan and some border cities of Iraq. The whole place is a cluster &*%$ of a mess and there just isnt a solution in sight, at least not for the next couple of generations anyway. The Middle East is the modern version of Indochina circa 1960's in terms of an unwinable war.

In this part of the world there just simply isnt any desire to come together as a society and move forward as one peoples. Too much history of in house fighting that these current generations will never let go of, thus lies the problem. When will the paradigm shift occur? certainly not in my lifetime. Im not sure when this will happen and nobody is but one thing i am certain of is our soldiers are not fighting for my country. The media can pump it up all it wants just like they did in the 50's and 60's….. "we must go to Korea/Vietnam and stop the advance of the Reds". Utter propaganda rubbish. The taliban, terrorist organisations, religious fundamentalists arent knocking down my parents front door in Newcastle. OUR soldiers are fighting for other countries and other peoples which makes their sacrifice all the more heroic and yet so utterly futile that they are fighting for peoples that lack the desire or will for change, they simply do not appreciate the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers fighting in their country on their behalf. It sickens me to tears and the sooner our soldiers come home, the sooner the Afghanies will be forced to move ahead as a nation and not be mollycoddled by "western" nations.

Always saddened to hear the news of a fallen Aussie soldier. Without turning this into a political debate, I feel Reyre is on the money, the Middle East is a turbulent pot of turmoil and I truly don't feel like they will ever coalesce into a unified region.

Bring our boys home. I know it is what they train for, but one life lost is one too many. If the poor fellas who died today had families to support, I trust our government will look after them.

Well said Reyre, agree 100%. I too have been over there and have seen what a hopeless situation this region is. A large percentage of the locals couldnt care less that Western countries are over there building infrastructure and fighting oppressive regimes so that they can move forward. It is depressing and you feel totally unapprceciated but the truth of the matter is that you can not help those who refuse to help them selves. I'd tell you what I really think of them but forum rules would obliterate me for doing so.

How many more Australian lives will be lost before people realise this?
