Think old Medhed might set a new record here

Just reading his wiki. Someone’s been trolling it. It says he was on 725k at the Cowboys in 1996. That has to be easily over 1 mil in today’s money.

I actually dont think that is far off. I thought it was $660 and I was close to impeccable sources in those days. It was in the dying days of the SL set up and they were desperate to get numbers. It is also around the time that Balmain were offered more money than any other club to switch, not because they were any good or had any positive assets, but merely they needed one more Sydney club to put the nail in the coffin. Madness in those days.

I remember a few players mentioning how much money he was on at the Cowboys, they were obviously jealous though. He had the physique and athleticism to be better than he was he just didn't seem to have the mongrel in him.

Lmfao that’s friggin’ good investigative journalism

It really is a ridiculous amount for that time. I remember in 2011 when we were talking to Blair, it was reported we were paying him 500k. THAT seemed exorbitant. And it was 15 years after and 200k less.

This is a friggin stitch up

Try having a goal kicking lock who played in the team of the 90’s

Not sure about the love for Mackay? Think people really are going off rusty memories...

He was tough and versatile, but top 5? No way

Just back to the lock voting for a sec.... Brad Mackay was a great player, a regular in strong NSW teams of that decade, Kangaroos as well. Tackling machine who never shirked his dirty hit-ups and was a superb support player who also made plenty of linebreaks. Won the Churchill Medal in a beaten side, that speaks volumes IMO. Led the Western Reds brilliantly as captain in their brief history, was always in their best players every week.
Played pretty much the whole decade too, very durable and consistent.
His high vote was justified IMO, would rather have him in any team compared to flashy blokes who have a big hit or two in them but have 1 good game in every 3. ?

Yes mate but not an exceptionally high-ceiling which I think remains the point of most votes... definitely had the toughest competition in position with Clyde for the NSW/Aus spot but if I recall correctly Jack Wighton won the Clive Churchill in a beaten side, and also, Mackay really wasn’t that hard of a hitter - you’re going off the old faded memory of him having a great tackling technique... he also was dropped from reps I think in the mid 90’s at some point and in all honestly was about the only *solid* player to look at when the reds played... just my opinion though... players like Nigel Plum and Dallas Johnson stand out as great workhorses but this guy was just average... happened to carve out a really great career. I watched him very closely!
