LEAGUE legend Arthur Summons has handed Wests Tigers superstar Benji Marshall the ultimate compliment - declaring he has never seen a better player than this modern day magician.

"He's out of this world. I've not seen anyone better," the spritely 75-year-old offered yesterday in the countdown to Friday night's showdown against the Dragons at the SFS.

Now, in case you didn't know it, the common practice for stars from yesteryear is usually to stick with the greats from their own eras when rating the best of the best.

But not Arthur.

In fact, 50 years after this old Magpie played in three consecutive losing grand finals for Wests against the mighty St George team from 1961-63 that boasted rugby league Immortals Reg Gasnier, John Raper and Graeme Langlands and the great Norm Provan, Summons didn't even blink when given the chance to clarify his statement that Benji was his No.1 pick.

"Well, he is a freak," he added. There's none better than him.

"For him to try and keep producing that effort, and that magic that he produces every week, is a major ask."

Summons will be a special guest at Friday's game with most of his former teammates - and some of his old sparring partners from St George - as the Wests Tigers pay tribute on this 50th anniversary year of the '61 grand final.

Players from both teams will attend a luncheon at the Coogee Crowne Plaza during the afternoon before they are presented to the crowd at the SFS. Summons is hoping the Wests Tigers can upstage his old enemy in 2011.

"One (losing grand final) was bad enough," he smiled.

"But three … it's heartbreaking."

Asked his thoughts on today's players, Summons said: "They are sensational athletes, there is no question about that.

"They are fitter.

"After our games, we used to be on the piss. These days, if they want to go out and have a drink some mug wants to put them down."

But Benji's his favourite.

He admits he tuned in to last Friday's thrilling comeback win over Manly and he couldn't believe his eyes.

"I don't miss a bloody game," he laughed.

"Even though I'm in Wagga, I don't miss it on TV.

"He just did some phenomenal things, didn't he?

"The no-look pass, that is incredible skill.

"Of course, he's got to have the other player there to make him look good.

"If he throws that pass and no-one is there he is a mug, but he obviously calls the players into the equation.

"Can you remember any halfback that can do what he can do?

"He's changed the game.

"There are only a few players who can claim to have done that.

"Joey (Johns) is one.

"The King up in Queensland (Wally Lewis), he changed the trend of the game.

"And this kid does.

"Now, who today can do the same things?

"No one."

Asked if he believed Benji could improve even further in years to come, Summons said: "I find it hard to see that he could improve on what he is doing.

"I suppose the thing that he can improve on is the consistency that it becomes every week."

I loved reading this, Im glad that legends can appreciate the "new legends" too often you hear the old timers banging on about the new generation not being a scratch on back in my day.

Really liked Arthur saying how he doesn't miss a game and is still a fan.

Good read.

Definetly not the best player ive seen , IMO.

Johns is lightyears the best player ive seen. Johns didnt need a big step and to throw flick passes…he just dominated games through vision and controlled the game better than anyone ive seen, alot better than benji.

It's good to read a nice "feel good" article for a change. He is right, Benji is a freak. Not many players have the ability to turn a game on its head like he does.

Yeah different type of player but lets not forget johns had been taking ban substances. He really shouldnt ever be considered for a immortal

He didn't take performance enhancing drugs…
If anything taking recreational drugs would have made him perform worse.
IMO he is the best player I have ever seen.

Yes true but it was banned wasn't it…..and it wasn't just smoko he was doing either

From what I 've been told Arthur Summons was no slouch either . Obviously a very knowledgable person as well . Hope we don't put him through any more heartache on Friday and give it to the Dragons Go Benji

Im one of benji's biggest fans, but to say hes the best player ever is clearly nonsense. He's not even the best in the comp at the moment or the best player of his generation. JT, smith and slater are all well ahead of him right now. Perhaps even Lockyer.

perhaps what Summons meant was that Benji can do the best things ever. He can do things no-one else past or present could even think of, let alone try.

That no look pass on the weekend was unbelievable. People often criticise benji for throwing flick passes etc when they werent neccessary, but with that no look pass, Lawrence was well and truly covered by brett stewart, and it was only the fact that benji was looking on the inside that made stewart hesitate for a split second, which gave chris enough room to sprint away.

but in terms of consistency and impact on a game hes still not quite there. if he can eliminate those really poor games, and perhaps lead the tigers to another premiership or two maybe he can be named in the same breath as johns, sterling etc. He has all the ability theres no doubt about that.

By the time Benji has finished his career, they will need a new category for the greatest players because he will be head and shoulders ahead of the Immortals. The Tigers will win this year's (and years to come's) premiership on the back of strong forward play and Benji Marshall's pure brilliance.

Joey is the best player i have seen, but Benji is the most brilliant.

Benji gets better each year, by the time he is finished he will be held in higher esteem.

I just loved that Arthur nominated a current player.

IMO as a race humans get better at most things, yet lots of us look back and say stuff like the modern player is no where near as good as they were back in the day.

Funnily I said a similar thinkg re: Johns (best player seen) when I read the article. I would not say he was alot better than Benji just different. Both players v dangerous when near or with the ball. Benji brings so much excitement to the game and people pay to see that. Not only that he WINS games by his creativity, not alone of course but he is the instigator. I just think he is great!! As far as Johns using drugs, this would have taken away from his game not improve it. The guy was a freak of a player, judge the footballer not the player when assessing his abilities on the park.
