I wonder whether he's being honest about only betting on the ponies and puppies

If the NRL wanted to keep him employed etc, while knowing he had these issues, he should have been moved into a training type role with other refs & away from game day decisions.

This seems a remarkably stupid decision by all involved.

I want his betting history revealed lol, maybe the infamous decision from the bunker a few seasons back he ruled in favour of the Cowboys at the death shows up on it.

Highly unlikely he'd be stupid enough to bet on the NRL, still, things that make you go hmm.

Video referee Ashley Klein was the bunker official in the controversial round 19, 2022 match between the Wests Tigers and NQ Cowboys.

The NRL later admitted that the bunker got the decision wrong and fedora pretended to grow some kegs to challenge but nothing..

And he over ruled the Bunker to send Pongia off in the last SOO, i wonder how much he had on that game

I don't think he would be corrupt and would go i.to any game with professionalism but having that gambling/depression in the background would effect some aspects of your refereeing for sure. A player coming up to you and carrying on and he would more likely get annoyed and go against him. I would in his place.

I have to question though why this came out at this instance? Seems suss.

Easier to rig a guaranteed $1.50 favourite
10k on the nose = 5k return
Easy money.
Just give them the early momentum and any 50/50s to go in the way of the favourite.

Or maybe some “kind heavies” helping him pay off his bets, for a little inside info.
The problem now is of course that every game he’s ever done, and every game he’s likely to do makes you ask questions, even if there is nothing to find.
Seems incredible that this has come out a week before he referees the biggest game this year ( so far).
I’d say that in the broader interests of the game V’landys must at least consider a change of referee ? And have he and Abdo been hiding it ?
