Balmain Leagues Club

On ten news they showed inside Balmain leagues club. It was filthy. There was dead rats in the club and in the car park there was graffiti and syringes. Squatters use it. It was quite a sad sight. They interviewed Paul Sironon and Keith Barnes.

They showed some of the meeting last night as well.

Was looking forward to some good information but can't expect much from the news on footy this time of year.
I'm not really sure what their stance was or the point of the segment other than to show the state of the building…. Hardly informative.

Now the council has voted to send the development to icac because Obeid was allegedly involved.

What a dog breakfast. So glad i moved out of there 10 years ago.

Given nothing has even been approved yet I'm still not sure what Obeid's alleged involvement has to do with things. I'm guessing the point of the exercise was to show the reality of the Save Rozelle crowd/LMC blocking redevelopment. The likelihood of low density development is low so its either some version of the Rozelle towers or the Rodent Radisson is here to stay…

I went out tonight and removed some of the posters that Liechhardt Council *cough* I mean SaveRozelle put up on power poles.

The NSW ELECTRICITY SUPPLY ACT 1995 in fact says that what SaveRozelle has done is ILLEGAL
http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/esa1995242/

65 Interference with electricity works
>
(1) A person must not interfere with a network operator’s or retail supplier’s electricity works unless authorised to do so by the network operator or retail supplier concerned.
>
Maximum penalty:
>
(a) in the case of a corporation-4,000 penalty units, or
>
(b) in any other case-200 penalty units or imprisonment for 5 years (or both).
>
(2) An offence under this section that is committed by an individual is an indictable offence.

I find it impossible to believe that they received authorisation to interfere with the supplier's works.

SHAME on them!
SHAME!

Good work Kul

I don't get the whole "Save Rozelle" perspective. The area looks like a deralict precinct and this development will only bring new investors and consumer traffic to the precinct.

Wouldn't this development go a long way to saving Rozelle?

self interest outdoes rationality with NIMBYS watto
A true local would support TIGERS, not make up ridiculous claims like we see from this mob

Derelict is a pretty apt description of it Watto. That whole stretch of road is a total eyesore.

For someone who isn't up to speed with this, can someone please explain it in brief? Will Balmain leagues club be back? If so when?

There is no set time or certainty that it will be back. Very political and community sensitive matter. Balmain leagues club is also $11m in debt.

The whole saga is sad but it was always going to be tough to get the redeveloment thru,i know people concerned with it approached Govt. figures for their support so lets hope no incentives were offered or it will end up being a bigger mess than its already is.It must be heartbreaking for some of the old Balmain officials/office bearers watching this all unfold.

Very true Basil… Once this has settled, maybe the Balmain boys should be looking at an alternative site to build a functioning leagues club that is in an alternative traffic corridor?

Regardless of the current debt, a solid business plan followed with sound corporate support should see the Balmain Leagues Club up and running again wherever that may be?!

Maybe the top floor at Birkenhead Point could be an alternative?
