Balmain saved from brink of extinction with new leagues club to come

I have lived in Balmain for the last 3 years after spending my life in the western suburbs.People who say that there no Wests Tigers supporters in the area are completely wrong. All my neighbours follow the Tigers and go regularly to games. On game day at Leichhardt ,Darling St is lined with people and all the pubs are packed. Its a great atmosphere and before i moved here i wouldnt have believed it.To the disbelievers try it some time and you will be surprised.

This whole idea about people in the Balmain area not knowing anything about Rugby League does my head in. I live in a suburb that borders Balmain and can assure you that the NRL is well supported in the area by young and old. The reverse snobbery is getting a little dull and the old latte drinking reference is way off because breweys are the go in the inner west these days.

What's a brewery?
Yuppy pub?
I know what it used to be

I think the hipsters call them micro brewery’s

People like drinking beer in the inner west.

People like drinking beer everywhere .
Why you upset ?

Not upset - they like drinking coffee everywhere too.

I wonder how many of these posts come from people who either lived there or even know the area. Some of the pessemistic posts lately show some really sad people.

Yep , it extends all the way into Ryde , and as far down as west Ryde , and Strathfield . That whole area is wests tigers . About 10 years ago , it became a “upper class hipster , bogan” thing to go to Leichhardt and watch the footy . When I lived in the area just after this , the love for the tigers was infectious , and you could go to any pub , in gladesville , Ryde , west Ryde , concord , and realise they’re tigers areas .
To me it’s like if Newtown were an NRL club , and wasn’t just a hipster thing , but had real money behind it .

I drove past the site today and there is signage up all over the place saying Balmain Leagues is returning and this Web address plastered everywhere.

https://www.balmainleagues.com/

Seems it will be Balmain branded and not Wests Tigers which I find a little disappointing.

I find that extremely disappointing. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Yep

Mind you the link goes to the developers website which has nothing to do with the Wests Tigers or Wests Ashfield.

The link goes to the site for the development that is set up by the developer. It almost looks like the entire project is being called Balmain Leagues

The Rozelle and Balmain peninsula is an extremely different part of the world these days. Wests Tigers Leagues would be shunned. Balmain Leagues will fit that demographic much better.

Seems to me WA understand their market.

Aren't you all going off a bit early? I can only see that the development is being labelled "Balmain Leagues", not any specific reference to the club.

It is, after all, famously located on the old Balmain Leagues site. It's like the Goldsbrough Building at Darling Harbour, neither owned by Goldsborough nor a woolshed any longer. The Tramshed at Glebe is not a mounting yard for light rail.

I personally think they should brand any new club as Wests Tigers, but we'll see what happens.

Seems you're a sensationalist looking for a gig with the telecrap.

Not a single mention of the Tigers yet you want to cause drama. It's nothing but an ad for real estate.

It's a business, the Tiger brand iconic in the Rozelle/Balmain area. The WTs' brand will be strengthened by its association with the Club.

Yeah, I understand that, just personally I would have loved a Wests Tigers branded club.

magpies are the Canterbury cup team i find that dissapointing its not wests tigers but as others have said its a business

I heard it was going to be called Tigers Leagues Club
wests at campbletoen has no mention of wests tigers
Ashfield is called Wests Ashfield and has a magpie and a wests tigers emblem with black and white V
As some have said it is about knowing your market

My post in not sensationalist at all, it was a discussion about what I saw today. Get off your high horse.

I guess there are valid arguments to put forward about multiple brands appealing to different demographics, but from my perspective, after 20 years of the joint venture, I would like to see all locations, all teams and all club activities branded Wests Tigers.

Because that's who we are now.

Do some research the Campbelltown club has no affiliation with Wests Ashfield in fact they would like to rid itself of all branding of Wests !

It's also part of the joint venture agreement. Both Balmain and Wests Magpies were assured they would always have a side in the second tier while ever they funded it.

Im not "going off" at all, it was in response to another question of why it wouldnt be called WT Leagues, I gave a reason and an opinion.

It extends all the way to Spurway Street Ermington - All WT supporters except for a few idiots that think they are in the Parramatta area because they pay their rates to that council.

WT's is the Football Club. The clubs fund the football club, always have always will.
The Balmain side of the JV are broke, Wests have helped them re-establish there licensed venue (bless them) so the WT's will have more support, instead of draining WA clubs funds.
It couldn't be called Wests LC because it would not have survived in the Balmain area.

Ah "going off" meaning reacting to a hypothetical name, rather than "going off" = getting mad.
