Balmain sell part of WT??

Balmain would consider selling part of their stake in Wests Tigers to a private investor if a stand-off over a $1 million financial shortfall cannot be resolved. As reported by Fairfax Media on Wednesday, the Wests Tigers joint venture partners are at loggerheads over control of the club, with the Wests Group prepared only to provide an urgent $1 million cash injection in return for an additional seat on the board and the chairmanship for three years. Balmain, who do not have the money to contribute to the shortfall, want independent directors to run the club and are in talks with the NRL about changes to the club's governance in return for a financial rescue package. Advertisement But if the Magpies do not agree to the terms of an NRL bailout, Fairfax Media has been told that selling part of their stake was ''definitely'' an option Balmain would consider and can reveal that talks have been held with potential investors. Sources said former Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys had held discussions with Primo Smallgoods owner Paul Lederer, who is a director of Western Sydney Wanderers and has been linked to a stake in the A-League franchise. Fairfax Media has been told that neither Balmain nor Wests Tigers actively sought private investors but potential buyers approached the club from time to time. Balmain's preferred option is for a board restructure and officials believe that under the control of independent directors, Wests Tigers would be run so efficiently that no further financial injections would be required from them or the Magpies. To do so would require the support of Western Suburbs but the Magpies may prefer to take the opportunity to right some of the perceived imbalances in the joint venture over its 14 seasons as Wests Ashfield has the capacity to foot any future bills. If the Wests Group rejects moves to install independent directors, Balmain will consider other options - including selling some of their 50 per cent stake in Wests Tigers, who have had a season to forget on the field due to a raft of injuries and the poor form of several players. Illawarra went down a similar path in 2006 when the Steelers sold a 25 per cent share in the Dragons to WIN Corporation to cover debts to St George incurred in the first seven years of the joint venture. As part of the deal, WIN chairman Andrew Gordon was given one of the Steelers' four seats on the St George Illawarra board, while the Dragons play at WIN Stadium in Wollongong and WIN Jubilee Oval at Kogarah. Balmain directors met on Tuesday night to consider their response to the Magpies proposal, which would give the Wests Group control of the joint venture, but after rejecting a similar bid to change the club's shareholding they are expected to do so again at next Thursday's meeting of the Wests Tigers board. Those on the Wests side of the joint venture believe their Balmain counterparts may be worried that they will want to change the club's nickname from the Tigers to the Magpies. However, Magpies officials have stated publicly that they will maintain the Wests Tigers identity if they are in control of the club and are not angling for a full takeover similar to Manly's dumping of North Sydney from the failed Northern Eagles joint venture. To do so would risk alienating more than two-thirds of the club's supporter base, including a generation of fans who have grown up supporting Wests Tigers since their foundation season in 2000\. But greater power going to the Wests Group may mean the association between Balmain and the Wests Tigers brand and identity is reduced to the same level as the Magpies. Twitter - @BradWalterSMH

Wow there must be a whole lot of hate in the boardroom. So if I get this right, Balmain would rather reduce its overall share of WT by selling part to "an investor", than temporarily hand one voting right to Wests.. Wow!
I guess their assumption is that this person would always vote with Balmain and would never sell that share especially to Wests… Suuuure that's going to happen!

I,m under the impression that either side of the venture has first rights to buy out either side before external entities are approached.

Every day you think the club has hit a new low and possibly a final low and then the next day comes and ….......

Where is this going to end up

Our club is being with a bunch of pathetic human beings who would rather see the club die than see the other prosper

Mr Smith ,please step in and end this madness

If this happens I am 100% out.
I support WT passionately to the point of insanity. I'd never want to go back to the Balmain days, WT is too good a brand to take a backward step.
I pray the club will get completely sold off privately, because neither sides on the board deserve to be there.
I can think of a group of at least fifty people who would also stop supporting them, add to that their friends, family & kids that they may know.

This will be the end of the Wests Tigers.

Can wests buy it?

Alot of constitutions give current stakeholders first option, but my understanding in the WT case, any change of ownership structure needs the approval of the NRL.

Balmain could sell part of there own identity (BFC) though, and this wouldnt change the ownership structure of the Wests Tigers.

I doubt anything will eventuate, as this is obviously a reaction from the offer from Wests to provide a loan for more seats.

Want Wests Tigers to move forward as its own brand? Well this is what needs to occur:

What does this mean? Its called Wests Tigers ( a name from each club) and we play the same amount of games at each ckubs traditional ground.

I am so sick of supporting this club with paranoid supporters thinking it represents one side more than the other.

Its 13 years later mate just get over it.

Are you serious? Harry only wants to know about us when we're successful. When the club hits the skids he's nowhere to be seen.

So suggesting the club moves further away from the remnants of Balmain and the Magpies to further develop the brand of Wests Tigers is bad?

No I think the point Southern Tiger is making was in reference to "the association between Balmain and the Wests Tigers brand and identity is reduced to the same level as the Magpies."

What a rubbish statement to make!

Since when has the Balmain side ever had more 'identity' than the Magpies? We are, after all, the WESTS Tigers. Combined name, colours, home grounds, regions, and a completely new logo.

I think people just get fed up of hearing this trash all the time.

Primo Smallgoods owner Paul Lederer is hands down one of Australia top business people. I have no bias in saying this, I have met the bloke once, know the Primo story and have some mates that work there (high up)

For those that don't know, Paul was the driving force behind Primo. Primo is a monster small goods business (Turns over 1bn+). Private equity has recently (last few years) bought in and hence Lederer, an Australian business legend is now probably cashed up.

To put it in perspective, he has a JV with Nick Politis (Roosters uncle Nick). Im not 100%, but I think they are mates.

On good authority I understand, he is has an eye for business, and eye for talent, is one of the hardest negotiators in Australia. He doesn't suffer fools. Lets be clear, there would be pain before gain. He is very very very loyal. Has lots of people who have worked for him for 20 years +, some with multiple generations.

He is exactly what we need! WOW, this would be massive!!!!

Even if he doesn't buy in, I would love to see him on the board - especially as Chairman
