Balmain Tigers Face Voluntary Administration

I have to admit that I'm not up with everything that has happened with the BLC over the years, but from everything that I've read over the last couple of years, it is obvious that the Council ( and probably the developers as well)do not want the club to survive.

Councils being what they are, if this is the case then the likelihood in the future is that the Council will get their way. While I can sympathize with the Balmain Members, I can't see much point in bashing their heads against a wall, maybe it's nearing the time to admit it's just not going to change.

As a WT supporter I just can't help wondering if all this conjecture and drama is doing the club any good.
As far as our club is concerned one big question keeps cropping up.

Is there any liklihood that Balmain will be able to pay their way into the future?

I'm not talking about whether any of us wants that to be the case. What I'm asking is whether that is even likely to be happening .
Nothing that I have read about the situation would make me think that there's much hope of that in the future.

How much damage is being done to WT's through all this conjecture about future finances?
What would be going through players minds about coming here ,

I hope that Balmain can get out of this, but if its as bad as it looks, and sounds,I hope that The situation is not allowed to be strung out until the very last. I hope the club is looking at alternatives if needed
There comes a time when cold hard facts have to be faced, maybe that time is coming.

Is it possible for Harry T to step in and buy Balmain? I was under the impression Wests have firsts dibs to buy out Balmains share of the JV.

But to keep Balmain alive could Wests offer the Balmain half to a private buyer or even allow members to buy shares to keep the Balmain name involved in the club?

I'm not very knowledgable on the whole thing, but my family has supported Balmain for generations and if Balmain was truly gone it'd be pretty shattering. I love and grew up on WT as a new club, but it would be pretty upsetting to see Balmain go and I would back Wests if they were in the same situation.

I still feel sorry for people who gave up on league after the Bears got the boot.

There's a lot of misinformation here. It was state government not council who had the decision to approve or reject the previous applications. Council increased the FSR specifically for the Balmain club to 3.9:1, but their application had about double that. Who could approve that ?

Just because he has money doesn't mean we want him running/ pulling the strings at our club.

The best Harry story is his plumber. He owned 12,000 apartments and employed one plumber to change washes etc. Now that's a lot of washes…

After years of faithful service and years of apartment numbers growing the plumber approached Harry to ask for some help. Harry yelled at him and fired him on the spot.

Two years and three odd plumbers later he hired three plumbers to do the work.

Rich people are normally rich at the expense of others. Don't confuse a good brain and ruthlessness with someone you want to own half of our club

Indeed, what on earth was Rozelle Village doing with the development applications that they put forward? Have they ever offered an explanation? Will they ever?

Forget blaming Rozelle Village.
The council told them to buy the surrounding properties for the zoning to go through -costing them $8 million 10 years ago.
The council, with one hand, is always trotting out the line they want them to survive, whilst with the other hand they are twisting the knife.
To top it off the previous boofheads in the State Labor government kicked them out to build the Metro and never built it.
Where's a good lawyer when you want one?

Wests Ashfield has already tried that approach and it was declined by Balmain. In fact,if Wests Ashfield's offer had been accepted, Balmain would still have voting rights on the Wests Tigers board, admittedly not a majority but a say nonetheless. Unfortunately, "we needed independence" and Balmain accepted the NRL's slightly less generous terms.

I think the reality is that the franchise will not be a merger for long.

Wests is simply allowing natural justice to take place.

For me, I was a Balmain fanatic growing up in Beverly Hills, I have embraced the Wests Tigers entity and care almost naught for the backroom stuff.

If it looks and feels the same, I and the ever growing family will remain Black and Orange

This is from a post that Darcy Byrne put on his facebook page:

"Before you put all the blame at Council’s feet you need to know about the developer - these guys haven’t covered themselves in glory either.

Last year International developer Rozelle Village, owned by Benny Elias’ former business partner Ian Wright, was trying to have the Balmain Leagues Club put into receivership - hardly what you call saving the Tigers.

After buying the site, the developer continually tried to get the State Government to approve a ridiculous over development, up to 32 stories. They put forward three different proposals, all huge, all of which were rejected by the state government because of their traffic impact. The Government was never going to allow Victoria Road to be turned into a car park."

I reckon Balmain were afraid that the team would revert to the Western Suburbs Magpies somewhere down the line, like what happened to North Sydney with the Northern Eagles. Doesn't that make sense? The Magpies have the majority of power in the club, and the Tigers can't pay their bills… wouldn't you take the opportunity to get your original team back in the competition?

Marina Go is promising that Wests Tigers are staying. I'm not sure that if the Wests Ashfield approach was accepted such a definitive promise would be forthcoming.

What a sad situation …..... at the mercy of governments and councils.
Hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel.

Think you'll find good old Darcy was on the council when they told Balmain they needed to buy the surrounding properties to get the zoning approved.
You can expect a developer to try and make as much money as possible - it is the council, that had Darcy as its mayor, that continually blocked everything.

Why bother putting forth a development application for the third time that you know is going to be rejected?

If Balmain go broke and lose ownership of the west tigers, the NRL will also depart and control will end up with Wests anyway. Theyve havnt achieved anything except possibly moderately annoying Wests.

I couldn't care less who owns the club as long as we're called Wests Tigers .

I be said this before and I'll say it again ….,
Where is my Wests Tigers leagues club ???

NRL have stated it will never go back to Wests Magpies.

They control the registrations - so Wests Tigers it is.

I've heard it said that when North Sydney Bears went bust the Northern Eagles license reverted to Manly. So I assumed Manly decided to scrap the Northern Eagles in favor of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles brand.

I think Western Suburbs should be entitled to do the same thing. Though I think it would be smart of them to not do so & keep the Wests Tigers brand.

Will the NRL own a stake in the club because they've put money in for Balmain? Will their appointed board members remain? I don't think they should have either.
