Balmain V St George 1988 POanasonic Cup On Now

Yeah i watched the game last night, didnt reach any great heights, went to that game, wouldnt say it was gary jacks best game in fact he cost us two tries that night one by dropping a bomb and one by an intercept, ohh well you cant win them all.

As I recall we (that is to say Balmain!) were in the cup final four years running. Won 2 and lost 2 I think. I remember getting crushed by Parra (a regular occurrence in those days sadly) one year. Beat Penrith in a final… Did we win 2 or just one?

Mick Stone was a pelican. Robbed us in the 1985 major semi against the Dogs too.

disapointed i missed this game. As a kid it was my treat to be able to stay up on a wed and watch the panasonic cup, loved it. Remember the Final vs Parra in about '86 or '87, i was only 7 or 8, and remember sitting up late with my ears taped up with electrical tape and my polish for my school shoes under my eyes, my parents who weren't really footy fans thought i was insane, told me to grow up when i cried on full time, i couldn't quite explain to them that it wasn't just a game and it was very important…...they still dont get it!

Came across the game while Channel surfing, I already knew the result but in hindsight were a little hard done by in reference to the Reffing (sic), poor old Balmain had to excel in these games to earn some hard earned $$$$ and usually prevailed but not that night.
One interesting aspect was that the game was played in a then 'State Of The Art Stadia' in the 'Heartland of Rugby League' but only hosted a very average crowd, apart from 1989 where it was still a mid season comp, 1990 saw the Panasonic Cup as a pre season competition.
What was really funny though was the fact that the commentary was from the Queenslanders, Billy J. Smith, a very young TK, some other neville and the King himself Wally.
Don't you just appreciate how well the the ground staff get the playing surfaces these days.
