BEATEN BUT STILL WINNERS FOR A GREAT YEAR
By Wayne Cousins
Sunday, October 04, 2009
They sat there silently, hearts aching but to every person inside the Wests Tigers dressing room, Grant Jones’ men were winners.
Still trying to come to grips with the pain of the controversial 24-22 loss to Melbourne Storm in the Toyota Cup Grand Final, the Wests Tigers players and coaching staff heard words of wisdom amongst strong support from coaching staff and officials alike as they sat there thinking about the match.
Amongst them was Stephen Humphreys, the Wests Tigers CEO who spoke from the heart in delivering this message:
‘On behalf of everyone at Wests Tigers, I want to congratulate you for your courage and commitment you showed today.
I know we didn’t get the result we looked for. You worked so hard and you deserve so much more.
I want you to know that throughout the year, you gave us all such a thrill with the way you played with such flair and excitement. Today, you added bravery and resolve to that.
“Commiserations but more importantly, congratulations on a fantastic year. You are the future of the Wests Tigers and our future is in very good hands.
“We all feel terrific about what lies ahead for you as players, and us, as a club.
“The football field is probably the best training ground you are ever going to get. There were lots of tough lessons learnt out there today. Take them on board. When you get time to reflect on the year you’ve had, I want you to feel really good about it.
“It was a tremendous success. Learn the lesson and we will be in much better shape next year and the years to come.
“Congratulations again on an outstanding year.”
Captain Darren Nicholls then walked around the room shaking hands with each of his players as he presented his team-mates with their runner-up medals.
Wests Tigers congratulate Grant Jones, his coaching staff, officials and the players on a superb and exciting season in 2009\. Roll on 2010.
