Usually im the first to sink the boot into the clubs management or sheens. However in this instance I really don’t see that they have done a lot of wrong. Obviously Im not in the loop with the club but from all the articles, interviews etc about these two it seems that it has been purely their decision to go.
Beau:
· Agreed to a three year extension
· Said the club hadnt given him the formal contract so HIS MANAGER sounded out other clubs
· He had a meeting with the sharks coach and was made to feel like a priority
· The club got him the AGREED contract on Monday
· On Tuesday he agreed to terms with the sharks and signed with them
99% of contracts are signed in the off season, its how its done. All agreements and letters of intent etc are done during the season proper then the legalities sorted out when the playing commitments for the year are over. This is why Moltzen didn’t go to the dragons, why Inglis didn’t go to Brisbane etc despite contracts being ‘agreed to’ months earlier. To me this says Beau got a better deal, or simply had a cry about something he didn’t like, probably Heighno leaving, or possibly Sheens had told him Lote and Korobiete were the first choice wingers next year and Beau would have to fight for his spot, we don’t know. But at the end of the day Beau was presented with the three year contract that was agreed, and HE chose NOT to sign it.
Heighno:
· Has one year to go on his contract with the club
· Wanted an extension but was told by Sheens that it would be unlikely to be granted and if he wants to play elsewhere next year he can
· Gets a three year deal with the sharks and leaves
Heighno was 100% welcome to stay here next year however he wanted the security of a long term deal as he is 30 now and its likely to be his last decent contract. The club allowed him to do this, they have done the right thing by him. HE WAS NOT SACKED, MOVED ON ETC.
You can say the club handled this unprofessionally but to me they have done what we as fans have been wanting, moving the ‘boys club’ culture on, the carry on that has ensued by the palyers has shown exactly why this has needed to happen. Look at when Braith, the Roosters CAPTAIN was told he had to prove his worth and might not get a contract for next year. He looked at his options and signed with the tigers, no media carry on, no ‘who is me’ interviews. He is a professional rugby league player, accepted his fate and got on with it.
I immensely thank Chris and Beau for their contributions to the Wests Tigers over the years, they always gave 100% and I don’t doubt that they love the club, however I think that it has worked out best for everyong that they have moved on and don’t think the club has done ANYTHING wrong at all by doing so.
