100% correct Demps.

He's a club legend. Possibly the most important member in our short history. Yes he has his issues but calling him a "flop" is completely untrue.

Just because 2005 was a long time ago, or that his Golden Boot win was 10 years ago doesn't make it irrelevant.

Our club has no history but you can't be crapping on whatever short good history we do have.

Broken leg and brutal snub led star to Souths

LOOK away Wests Tigers fans, this one’s going to hurt.

Lachlan Ilias grew up in the heart of Wests Tigers territory , idolising his hero Benji Marshall .

Now, after a broken leg and a brutal snub from the Tigers , the star in the making will make his debut in the halves alongside Marshall for South Sydney.

“It was difficult for him – there was a lot of talk at the (Tigers) about big, big plans for him,” Lachlan’s father Arthur said. “It didn’t quite work out that way. The pathway system we could see at the Rabbitohs, I could see longevity and a clear pathway to the NRL.”

Ilias has been working closely with his manager Braith Anasta.

There must be a million stories like this regarding the way WT treats players, doesn’t recognise skilful players, can’t retain good players etc. This is not news, but it is old news hopefully.
If we’re pinning our hopes on Pascoe then hopefully his big blunders are behind him?

Most of it is just media beat-up garbage with not much truth to it. The media can basically say what they want, truth or not, with no rebuttal these days. If/when our club ever gets back to being successful these maggots will be scrambling all over our club to get on the bandwagon.....we've witnessed it before.

Weak to shit on Benj atm

Yeah, club legend hey...

Walked out on us to join a RU club... failed.

Carried on in the media because he wasn't offered a contract before signing 1 year deal with south's.

Trashes us on TV with his fox buddies whenever he gets the chance.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that has gone off Benji in recent times. Benji cares about Benji ?? I see through it.

He's still done more good for the club than the entire current squad combined. You can crap on him when someone in the club achieves more than him but him, Robbie and Sheens are the reasons WT are even on the map somewhere.

Not asking you to lick his feet, but showing him disrespect and calling him a flop is way off the mark. We don't have a rich enough history to disrespect whatever good history we do have.

And that's what we're use to.
Mediocrity.

Benji did this and did that, at the Tigers.
We must praise him as the club legend he is.

Thanks for all those hospital passes into row 10 and all those 9th and 14th finishes.

I'm not with it.
He's part of the history of Mediocrity and failure.

Im about the future and what success it may hold.
Not being nostalgic about a player that showed some glimpses of brilliance but was mostly erratic, out of control and disorganised on the field.

He's a South's player.
He was a broncos player.
He was a dragons player.
He was some failed rugby union player.
Yeah he was a Tiger... good on him.

We have the memories and what not but those days are long gone.
Thanks Benji. But no thanks Benji fans.

Why not ...Benji crapped on all of us ....

LOL no one is accepting mediocrity, but if there has ever been one aspect of Wests Tigers that hasn't been mediocre, it's Benji and Robbie.

All I can say in this matter that I haven't said before is other players and officials see the way fans and the club treats its legends. If they can't see us treating even Benji in a respectful manner, I don't see why they'd want to come to this club.

Happy to leave it as it is.

Benji himself admitted he was mediocre and wasn't working hard before he went to Rugby .....

That's life.

One minute you're hot and everyone loves you... the next you ain't nothing.
Especially in the world of sports.

I for one will always remember Benjis legacy.
Prancing around in Aukland Blues jersey, diva behaviour and expecting everything.
He wanted to be a half back but wear 6.... sulked if he had to play in the 7.

Guy was a very innovative player in his prime and brought some new exciting skills to the game. Got complacent and stopped putting in on the field. Can't support that...

4 club journey man player.
If you're a fan, say you're a fan and I understand.

I just think he did more bad than good across his career and it wore thin with me years ago.

Could be in relation to this?

https://www.rabbitohs.com.au/news/2018/09/05/rabbitohs-lead-the-way-with-exciting-new-pathways/

I don’t see how their pathways are any different to other Sydney clubs, including us.

One club? One goal? Certainly makes it much clearer than starting as a Balmain junior, playing for Wests Tigers in your late teens. then playing for Wests Magpies or Ryde Eastwood if your not good enough for first grade but if you are good enough your playing for Wests Tigers in the NRL.
unless you come from the other side where you swap out Balmain for Wests and you go wests, wests tigers, wests, wests or wests Tigers. Clear!

There’s a WT Flegg team. Honestly if you can’t cope with moving from the Balmain SG Ball team to the WT JF team you may not be cut out for NRL football. Rooster run two junior comps and seem to cope. Same with St George/Illawarra.

Nobody is playing State Cup for Ryde Eastwood in our pathway. As much as I’d rather have a WT reserves team, if it’s the basis for you leaving you may have larger problems.

Not state cup. But it is still part of our pathways program.
When we have a full strength first grade squad. 10-11 players drop back to reggies. The remaining of the reggies squad is filled with Train and trial and dev players.
If you are too old for Flegg and not on either of the three contracts listed above you will most likely play senior football for Ryde Eastwood or Mapgies in Ron Massey and the tier lower Sydney Shield

How many guys do you reckon make it to first grade after a stint in Ron Massey Cup?

I’m not sure,
The way I read it is the elite juniors go from Wests Tigers Flegg to Wests Tigers First grade.
And the guys that have to do it the harder way go through Ron Massey and NSWCup.
The other problem is we only seem to be recruiting “juniors” through each of our local junior elite teams.

Rabbitohs have many more options set up.

You only need google Rabbitohs Pathways to see for yourself how well structured their program is.

They don't actually, they have exactly the same as we do

So we didn't re-sign a local boy and replaced with the player who was widely regarded as the best halfback at that age in the country at the time. Madden. Sounds like good business to me.

Ultimately whom kicks on still remains to be seen but the recruitment logic is sound.

Can't fit everyone into one side

I agree with you there.

It’s great to have a 70 or 80% locals goal like Penrith have done and I recall one of our upper managers expressing the same desire a few years back, but if the talent isn’t there there is no point twiddling your thumbs waiting until it generates one day.

2009
Australian coach Tim Sheens creates a stir on the eve of the Four Nations series by claiming that a faction at his Wests Tigers club wanted Benji Marshall sacked because he was a waste of money. Marshall, who was preparing to captain the Kiwis against Australia, later claims he would have walked out on the club if he had known he was not wanted.
