The Rugby League International Federation has confirmed what Wests Tigers members already knew – Benji Marshall is the game’s best five-eighth.
Marshall has been given one of the highest accolades in the game after being judged the best five-eighth in the Rugby League International Federation Team of the Year in Leeds on Monday.
The mercurial five-eighth was named the Wests Tigers best back for 2009 in a season that saw him overcome the dreaded shoulder injuries that haunted him in the past. Marshall has continued his fine form in England over the past few weeks as captain of the Kiwis in the Four Nations tournament.
Marshall joins his Wests Tigers team-mate Gareth Ellis in the Team of the Year after the English international was named the world’s best second-rower.
Prior to the Kiwis tackling England last weekend, Marshall had nothing but praise for Ellis.
“Of all the second rowers I've played with, he's got the highest work-rate," Marshall told the Press Association.
"I didn't really know how good he was until I got to play with him. He's one of those guys you want to play with and, on top of that, he's probably the nicest guy that I've met.
"It's definitely been great to play off his offloads this year.”
Marshall is now enjoying a well earned break before returning to Concord Oval to begin his preparations for season 2010\. Wests Tigers will field three internationals next season in Marshall, Ellis and Australian hooker Robbie Farah under the guidance of Australian coach Tim Sheens.
International Team of the Year:
Full-back: Jarryd Hayne (Parramatta and Australia)
Winger: Ryan Hall (Leeds and England)
Centre: Greg Inglis (Melbourne and Australia)
Stand-off: Benji Marshall (Wests Tigers and New Zealand)
Scrum-half: Johnathan Thurston (North Queensland and Australia)
Prop: Fuifui Moimoi (Parramatta and New Zealand)
Hooker: Cameron Smith (Melbourne and Australia)

I think Benji and Gareth deserved these awards very much,
your thoughts?
