Are we possibly opting for too much size on our edges and forgetting about the athleticism required to defend well in these crucial positions?
The Bears look extremely well drilled and are coached by the Jersey Flegg coach we sacked mid season last year?
If you break it down to the basic fundamentals of player skill sets and attributes required for each position, the Bears have an ex 5/8 playing 13 who ball plays as crisply as anyone as their captain and regular 1st receiver.
They have a fullback who is very good at playing out the back of shape and runs onto the ball at top speed each time he does this, plus has great ball playing ability.
They have a very under rated as hard as nails hooker who is a hard hitting reliable defender and has slick service from dummy half.
They have two not overly big, but athletic edge 2nd rowers who run good lines, defend well and do not get tired.
Matt Stimson an ex centre is one that definitely should be in and around an NRL team.
Our edge backrowers are too slow. More suited to middles.
Sukkar and Roberts types are slow to slide wide after fatigue sets in and cover the inside backs
We need to sacrifice some size for 80 min. goers with some speed.

Watched the tries again to see where our lapses were in the 2nd half.

Amazingly 5 of the 6 tries scored by the Bears in the 2nd half were on our left edge with poor connection, slide speed & decision making between Roberts, Andrews, Saukuru & to a lesser extent Fainga’a on the wing (and one of those tries Josese Lanyon was out there beaten for speed by Toby). Watching the replay really showed how poor this edge was as all those tries should have been defended by a well-drilled & structured line.

The other try was a dummy half barge over which Mason was not strong enough to hold up but badly exposed by Geyer & Samuelu.
It is funny what we were taught as kids is still so relevant 30 years later.

What is the club doing about Sukkar and Roberts? Has one of the high performance team discussed their transition to the front row? Has our recruitment officer been busy attempting to identify second row options? These are questions which immediately come to mind when I read posts with this information.

I’ve had many discussions about the importance of playing touch football as a warm up component of training.
Many people seem to think there is no correlation between touch and tackle, however the basic fundamentals that apply to touch, also apply to tackle.
The whole game is based on ruck speed and the importance of not being lazy or out of play as the A defender and most importantly numbering up man on man when defending.
In addition to that it promotes creativity with ball in hand.

Roberts is a front rower . I’d be moving him there in the offseason . I actually think when he makes that move he could be something special , as from what I can see his big flaw at the moment is lateral defence . Which could be positioning , I mean sure , but really it’s he lacks that agile burst of speed . I just hope we can convince him that’s his future . He’s a gun . Anybody judging a kid for his mistakes in his first 5 games needs to have their head read . His whole game screams at the very least 200 gamer to me . Just has some issues like most kids do .

Agreed. Props are valuable and we know both those players are NRL quality. It saves the club having to go to market for a prop.
