Benji Marshall is freakiest I've seen - Ray Warren
Dean Ritchie From: The Daily Telegraph March 03, 2011 12:00AM

RAY "Rabbits" Warren has watched and called about 1000 games of rugby league over 45 years. He's seen the best of the best: Bob Fulton, Graeme Langlands, Arthur Beetson, John Raper, Reg Gasnier and Andrew Johns.

But Warren, the veteran Channel 9 broadcaster, yesterday claimed Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall was as good as any he'd seen. It was a stunning tribute for Marshall, who was chosen to officially launch the 2011 season at Casula yesterday.

"I have been blessed to see so many gifted players," Warren said. "Graeme Langlands, Arthur Beetson, John Raper, Reg Gasnier, Bob McCarthy, Ron Coote, Bob Fulton, Ray Price, Peter Sterling, Allan Langer, Brad Fittler and Andrew Johns.

"Then there is the current crop of Darren Lockyer and Johnathan Thurston. Benji Marshall is in their class. He would take away the breath of any of the Immortals. He has the most freakish skills … I have seen.

"He does things I have never seen before. If those greats once sat on a throne, well, Benji is now occupying the same throne. He can do things those others can't. Mind you, they could do things Benji couldn't."

Warren said Marshall was a true worker of miracles on the field, adding:

"He is the master of the no-look pass. He throws a dummy when you believe he's passed the ball. The flick pass around back, made famous in the 2005 grand final ... the chip and chase."

Marshall spoke yesterday about his desire to play entertaining football again this season. He said: "I love taking risks. If someone does something good, you always try to do something better.

"I have a belief [Wests Tigers] can go well. But so does everyone else … I think it will be the most exciting season so far."

Here Here - On and Off the field, There is no other.

I wish Benji all the best and I can see him being regarded higher than both the modern day champions Johns and Lockyer in the very near future.

Im starting the call for Benji Marshall to be the next immortal of the NRL.

Man I am so pumped for 2011….I truly believe if we have no major injury setbacks then we can go all the way. As for Benji, I am so glad he is on our team; I am so glad he is a loyal person and wants to be a one club player. Beji will end up being the most celebrated player in the NRL...he just conducts himself so well off the field - the ultimate professional and champion bloke....he is so humble.

I still cant beleive so many people were ready to let benji go. people on this forum were calling for his head not so long ago saying he was on to much money and we could spend that money better elsewhere. i for 1 always had faith in the kid and am so glad he stayed and fought hard to overcome his injuries. he is a true champion and will be remebered as 1 of the greats of all time

Benji has become the heart and soul of this club. He has developed into a true leader on and off the field and I think we as suports are lucky to have him at our club. The club has shown him tremendous support through a crippling period with injury and he has stated his desire to repay that faith. With Benji around and only going to mature with age the club has a bright future ahead (not to mention a few of the other core players who are at the same stage in their careers)

I could not have been prouder to be a Tigers supporter watching him speak so eloquently & sincerely at yesterday's season launch!

Between him & Robbie we have two of the greatest players & leaders in the competition!!

Totally agree 100% all the Tigers players make me proud to be a Tiger supporter They look like they all get on like a house on fire both on and off the field Saw an interview in 2005 that now that they had won premiership they were brothers 4 life And they play like they are brothers GO TIGERS

There are so many muppets out there. I never got the criticism of him. Yes he makes mistakes however he was always judged differently to other players. He has the ability to win us games and he has proven it. He isn't your everyday player.

Agreed we can all be very proud that Benji was selected of all the players in the NRL to launch the season. Congratulations to Benji and his family.

People were also worried about signing him on a longterm contract on that amount of money because of all the injuries he was getting. I'm so glad things have worked out for him.

With him on the ground you never feel out of a game - that's a great feeling to have a fan. Better, as previously mentioned, he seems like an outstanding person off the field.

would not swap benji for any other player in league, esl or nrl. cant believe how some people, who obviously know very little about footy, slag off about him. suppose you cant educate a mug.

i love benji as much as the next tigers fan, and on his day, he is of course the best player in the game, however to be considered an all time great he has to produce on the field every week. He is the type of player that lifts his game for the big matches, however in some of the regular season match against lesser teams, he has more than his share of off games. eg. His kicking games goes, he starts to force silly passes. Someone like Joey Johns had very few off days. ie. the difference between good and bad benji is a great distance, where as with most of these immortals, even on their off day they were still one of the best players on the field.

BUT, i know benji will get there and 2011 is the season that it happens. Tiges all the way!

all i can say to you is go and see the matches andrew jones played before he was 26.

all that's recorded now are Johns best, so we think he played like that every game. Not true

Benji at 25/26, is a superior rugby league plyer.
