Captaining the NRL All Stars for the first time was a proud moment for Benji Marshall.
But the Wests Tigers playmaker remains unsure about some of the game’s new rules.
Marshall took over the captaincy from the retired Darren Lockyer this month in the NRL All Stars’ 36-28 win against the Indigenous All Stars at Gold Coast’s Skilled Stadium.
The New Zealand captain conceded the result of the annual match was not as important as the work both teams did with the indigenous community in the lead-up to it.
“First time as captain it was a pretty proud moment for myself and my family,” Marshall said.
“To tell the truth the amount of work we did for the the indigenous community and how much we raised makes you more proud than the actual game.”

New rules were also trialled, such as a power play where each team nominates a five-minute period where the other team is reduced to 11 players.
Another new rule had the referee call six more tackles for ruck area infringements rather than give a penalty.
“Some of them were alright, some of them were a bit unrealistic,” Marshall said.
“The power plays I don’t think we could have in our game. It’s a bit out of control trying to defend with 11 players.”
Marshall was also unsure about the “six again” rule because it was an “easy way out for referees rather than blowing a penalty”.
