BENJI MARSHALL WINS MAGPIE AWARD
29/07/2011 3:39:24 PM

Wests Tigers superstar Benji Marshall was today crowned the 2010 Magpie Award winner at a lunch at Wests Ashfield Leagues Club.

Marshall was the obvious winner after such a stellar year in 2010 that included the Golden Boot Award and a Four Nations title as captain.

Due to playing commitments tonight, Marshall was unable to attend the luncheon but in a pre-arranged presentation, revealed what an honour it was for his name to be added to the trophy.

“It’s obviously a great award to win. With the company of the people that have won this award in the past, it means a lot to me,'' Marshall said.

“I’d really like to thank Wests Tigers, all the players and the coaching staff for their support in 2010\. I’d also like to thank Wests Ashfield for their support of not only myself but the Wests Tigers Club. You’re an integral part of our success too.”

The 2010 Magpie Award recognises the outstanding sporting achievements and commitment that has taken place within the immediate sporting community of the Inner West area.

Previous winners include Australian Cricket Captain Michael Clarke and Wheelchair Olympian, Kurt Fearnely, who was last year’s winner.

The Board of Wests Ashfield also made a $5000 contribution to the Benji Marshall Foundation, an organisation set up by Marshall to help raise money and awareness for the treatment of children’s cancer.

Marshall also indicated that he will contribute a further $5000 to his foundation out of the $10,000 prize money he will receive from winning the award. He also praised Wests Ashfield Leagues Club for their generosity in making the donation.

“$5000 is a lot of money to what I think is a great cause. Our Foundation supports the treatment of children's cancer and it is obviously close to my heart. I have been through it with my family and it means a lot to me. For Wests Ashfield to donate that much money, it really means a lot to me,” he said.

Wests Tigers also received $2000 for the award and Chief Executive Stephen Humphreys said this will be donated to the Benji Marshall Foundation, making a total of $12,000 going to a great cause.

He is spectacular on field and even more brilliant off it.
Superstars often become role models, he is a brilliant example of one for many people out there.
