Benji Marshall's first Dally M - 5/8 of the year

Well done indeed! To get this award over Darren Lockyer in his final year is no mean feat - congrats Benji!

Congrats to Benji on achieving his first Dally M 5/8 of the year award. It's an excellent accolade to be awarded leading into the finals and I'm sure we'll see Benji primed for a big game on Friday night.

BENJI MARSHALL NAMED DALLY M FIVE-EIGHTH OF THE YEAR

Wests Tigers superstar Benji Marshall has tonight been named the Dally M Five-Eighth of the Year.

Marshall has enjoyed a stellar season and finished second to Melbourne’s Test full-back Billy Slater for the Dally M Player of the Year for best and fairest.

Slater polled 29 points to finish two points ahead of Marshall with Melbourne half-back Cooper Cronk two points further back.

When voting went behind closed doors after round 16, Marshall was sitting on 13 points before picking up the maximum 3 points in four games to move to second place on the ladder on 27 points behind Slater heading into the final round.

Slater sat out the Storm’s final match of the season but Marshall failed to pick up a point in the final round against Cronulla after a starring performance by Wests Tigers gooker and captain Robbie Farah.

Marshall now joins Farah in finishing runner up in the Dally M Player of the Year award in recent seasons.

The Kiwi Test captain said he was pleased to receive the Dally M Five-Eighth of the Year, his first Dally M trophy. Marshall has missed just one game in the past two seasons after overcoming shoulder injuries. His outstanding form has played a pivotal role in Wests Tigers’ eight game winning streak.

Marshall also became the Club's leading points scorer of all time this season.

“It’s been good. I have worked pretty hard in the gym in the off-season to try to get a little bit bigger and try and get stronger. I’ve had good guys around me to get me back to where I wanted to be,’’ Marshall said.

“To finish fourth is a big achievement for our team and it is something we are very proud of.”

Earlier Wests Tigers prop Keith Galloway was nominated for the Prop of the Year for his outstanding season but the award went to North Queensland’s Origin rep Matt Scott.

Farah was nominated for the Provan Summons Medal as chosen by the public, won by Nathan Hindmarsh. Farah was also nominated for the Hooker of the Year but the award went to Melbourne’s Test hooker Cameron Smith.
