Big Thank You To Tiger's Recruitment!

We have't signed anyone past 2017 with the exception of Lawrence. Over the last few years we have let players of note go in Ben Teo (QLD), Fifita (NSW), Koro (International Standard, Austin (Country Origin Level) and we lost Taupau after he came good again on a short term deal. My word we have low expectations if we are happy with our recruitment and retention.

Signings of ET, JAC, MCK and Tim Grant were astute however, I don't rate much else.
Ballin is poor and the rest of the signings are not worth mentioning. We are heading in the right direction however, shot term deals for young players simply has us developing players for bigger clubs.

We didn't let Te'o go, that bloke is an absolute mercenary and was always going to go wherever the hell he wanted. After he'd signed with Brisbane he turned around and dogged us for the rest of the season which was a fair indication of his level of class. Good player but human excrement.

In regards to players leaving, you can't keep them all, unles you put them all on long term back ended contracts.

We still need some further movements but I think we have made some tough calls in the last 18 months

Taupau hasn't proven to me he is worthy of a 600 k a season player

I don't think we can make a call on the Austin /Moses debate and won't be able to for a few years yet

He has seen the writing on the wall for Farah and Sironen and made some good calls as far as that is concerned Farah has been good in a few games this season , but is nowhere where near the 2011 version of R Farah

And yes in the old days you could let players slowly subside until they decided to retire and be one club players , but with salary caps that isnt' so easy anymore

Players who want to be one club players are going to have to take pay cuts in their twilight years like Lockyer ,Hodges ,Matt Bowen etc etc etc to remain that way and maybe play a season or two in the ESL

Yep great thread. Taylor deserves the criticism on many fronts but on recruitment and retention it is hard to fault any decision, apart from releasing Nathan Brown, particularly given the cap problems he faced when he came here.

Potter released Nathan Brown not JT.

Hodges played for the roosters too
He misses out.

No he didn't - Brown left us at the beginning of last year… Potter was long gone.

- And to be fair to JT, He also had Matt Lodge coming through... I'm guessing he wasn't intending that to go south as it did.

There are signs we are coming out the other side after the disaster of the humprheys and Mayer administrations. Best thing that happened to us was Balmain going broke which helped trigger board reform.

Hopefully qld can convince our marquee player to retire from nrl in game 2

Brown signed with souths in march 2015, Potter was long gone.

Yep - Good Post pHyR3 - glad someone has brought this up. I believe we've been heading in the right direction, for the most part, with retention for a while now. In my mind the only players that have left recently (or we haven't chosen to chase) that one might argue were worth keeping were Koro, Taupau, Austen and JAC (unfortunately I believe he has gone). I think it can be argued (apart from JAC) that these players either didn't want to stay anyway, or could not be retained due to cap circumstances etc.

In actual fact we have cut a lot of deadwood and the roster now looks far more interesting than it did 2 years ago. Still need some gaps filled in the centres and wing, a goal kicker, a couple more quality forwards but all in all considering our situation, I think whoever has been responsible for retention choices over the last 18 months or so has done a great job!

Hahaha …the fact that majority of supporters here feel recruitment and retention is great just goes to show why this club only needs to strive for mediocrity to keep our clueless fans happy. While ever we are content to let players like Jac go while signing the likes of Lovett the place will never ever change.

anything concrete on JAC?

we've got him for all of this year and was a great pick up by us, if another club wants to offer a winger with single digit NRL games 350k+ and we are unable to match it, that seems fair enough to me.

cant win em all

Well if our talent scouts knew what they we doing they would have seen from day one that Jac is something special and could have been signed for peanuts . But no we parade him around and watch his value increase to the point we will not match the offers.
Is everyone happy to have 20% of our cap just being spent on 2 players that are barely 1st graders ? While we arent prepared to spend a fraction of that for someone that actually performs .

signing up kids on more than peanuts is how we got into that supposed mess anyway

just like when we locked up lawrence for 5 years and he dislocated his hip

in any case, the pair are good players in my books and if you look at the stats theyve both improved year on year overall

Ordered 2014, 15, 16 and per game

Green means improvement on the previous year

**Luke Brooks:**

Try Assists: 0.57, 0.7, 0.9

Line-break Assists: 0.71, 0.6, 1.0

Errors: 1.14, 1, 0.7
\
\
Line-breaks: 0.14, 0.2, 0.1

Tries: 0.28, 0.4 , 0.3

Offloads: 0.3 , 0.3, 0.5

Missed Tackles: 5.4, 3.3, 4.9
\

\
**Mitchel Moses:**

Try Assists: 0.5, 0.6

Line-break Assists: 0.5, 0.6

Errors: 1.0, 0.9
\
\
Line-breaks: 0.2, 0.3

Tries: 0.1, 0.3

Offloads: 0.4, 0.3

Missed Tackles: 4.0, 4.1

I'm seeing a fair bit of green for both. especially for try assists, line break assists, and errors which are all pretty important for halves.

and i think theyll get even better as our pack gets better and they get more experienced

Great point, I remember a similar hysteria & a rush to sign Jackson(Lapina )Kaufusi to a long term deal.He has ability but still has a lot of developing to do.
