BLACKTOWN, not Campbelltown, is now tipped to win a new 50,000-seat stadium as part of Australia's 2018-2022 football World Cup bid.

After learning the AFL would not allow the use of Etihad Stadium, the FFA has spent the past six months debating the best alternative site for the 12th and final venue.

Campbelltown was widely expected to get the nod after winning support from the NRL, but sources close to the FFA and NSW Government tell us the new stadium will be promised to Sydney's booming northwest.

With the FFA due to submit its bid next Friday, an announcement is expected any moment now.

In the meantime, soccer officials are still desperately trying to secure support from the rival codes to sign off on the bid document.

While the NRL and rugby are understood to be on board, the

AFL is still making life difficult in regards to its long-term lease with the MCG that extends past both future World Cups.

Dare we speculate that if the new Blacktown Stadium happens to be oval-shaped - and therefore compatible to the new GWS franchise's needs - Andrew Demitriou will roll over?

in the words of phil gould - no, no no, no no no no -no :deadhorse:

Wow the Government building another white elephant in Sydneys west.

Well done

Yeah it makes you wonder what the hell they'll do with Blacktown after the World Cup. Do we really need a 3rd 50,000 seater in Sydney anyway?

Blacktown is close enough the Stadium Australia. They don't need another big stadium out there. Bad decision!

Sydney doesn't need another 50,000 seat stadium anywhere and I include Campbelltown in that. Seriously I'm getting sick of footing the bill for Football Australia's giant wankfest in trying to get the World Cup here especially when it looks like we've got Buckley's of getting it anyway.

I thought the Western Sydney AFL team wanted to play their home games at ANZ Stadium anyway???

My information that the stadium is rectangular in shape. FFA wanted Blacktown mostly to piss off AFL who want the world cup bid to be the AFL stadium cup. FFA see the second A league side playing at Blacktown and the state government is still hoping us or the Bulldogs play a large amount of home games their. It is a crap decision and should be either Liverpool or Campbelltown. Even if it is in the bid book as Blacktown it can be changed before the world cup if we win the bid. A number of stadiums were changed in location in South Africa after the bid was won. Will more than likely be a new state government by the time a final decision has to be made on the exact location.

I am all for a new 50,000 seat stadium for league and soccer in our city especially when you see how great such a stadium can be (every one so go to at least 1 game at Suncorp in Brisbane) and the fact that AFL is getting great new venues every were out of the world cup.

I doubt we'll get it either.

They won't give it to us because it's not ideal for European broadcast. Everyone in Europe will be up at all hours watching games.

I'd have the Olympics here again over the World Cup anyday.

Agreed. Mainly because we're better suited for the Olmypics which is basically one city. (Soccer) World Cup needs at least 4 or 5 big cities preferably not spread out over an entire continent. Seriously what's in it for FIFA? They aren't going to get any returns from it to justify the whole thing.

Campbelltown might get another upgrade in a few years anyway. Hopefully they can extend the upper level of the western stand.
