Blair part of our 'fabric': Potter tears hole in Eels recruitment plan

Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter has thrown a road block in Parramatta's plan to recruit prop Adam Blair for 2014 by insisting the Kiwi international remained in his plans for next season - and beyond - because he was part of the club's ''fabric''.

Blair joined the club in 2011 with a reputation of being one of the world's best forwards and apart from commanding a $500,000 contract the Tigers offloaded the likes of NSW prop Andrew Fifita and Bryce Gibbs to Cronulla to accommodate him.

However, Blair was associated with Parramatta during the week after Eels coach Ricky Stuart told 12 of his players they weren't wanted next year. It is believed his former club Melbourne is also keen on him.

While Blair has struggled at the Tigers to find the form of his time with the Storm and World Cup-winning Kiwis side, Potter was adamant he would rediscover his groove in the black and gold.

''It's news to me,'' said Potter when quizzed about Blair's possible mid-contract move to Parramatta. ''I don't hear rumours too much. I talk in fact and the fact is Adam is here and I want him to stay.

''He's by far and away one of our best forwards and he plays accordingly. He sets examples on and off the field. Adam, Benji [Marshall], Keith [Galloway] and Woodsy [Aaron Woods] are the fabric of the club.''

The bottom-of-the-table Tigers received a boost on Friday when prop Galloway, who has played five Tests for Australia, signed a new three-year-deal. ''He has a presence about him, Keith,'' Potter said of the 27-year-old. ''Unfortunately he has had a few injuries which have set him back but, certainly, when he's on the field he makes a lot of metres for us and stops people on contact.''

Galloway's year was frustrated by the pectoral tear injury he suffered in the round-two victory over Sunday's opponents, Penrith. Potter, in his first season as an NRL coach, rued the impact injuries to the likes of Galloway, Chris Lawrence, Liam Fulton, Blake Ayshford, Lote Tuqiri, Tim Moltzen and Robbie Farah had had on the club's campaign.

''It's a situation where you'd prefer to have all your best players [playing] but unfortunately that hasn't happened at any stage this season,'' he said. ''We have a lot of work to do with the young blokes and while I'm happy with the way they're going it's just not translating into wins. They're trying their hardest and they'll be better for it because they'll know what it takes to play NRL; they'll know there is a little bit more work to do off the field.''

Potter pointed to Penrith as one club that had worked through the scenario his team was enduring.

''They're going real well, they've suffered some adversity but in that they have found a couple of gems and it is translating into wins for them,'' he said. ''Now they have a few players that are potentially coming back they're in a tough situation [to pick teams] and I hope to be in that situation very soon where you're winning games with some young people. They're on the up, they're going to be tough to beat this weekend but we still think we are a chance.''

By far and away one of our best forwards???? Please Mick, if you're going to talk in facts, you might want to throw some of Blair's stats in for good measure. I'm sure he's a nice guy but he's an oxygen thief.

Part of the fabric of our club? Thats Probably why everyone thinks were soft then

Or it could be the bean counters have worked out that it may be better to hang onto him rather than top up his contract if he leaves

WOW…..And here was I thinking it was Robbie and to a lesser extent Rowdy who were the fabric of our club....

My feeling is that he was being chased for 200-275k and the board or whatever said they don't want to foot the difference so potter has to defend his player. He can't exactly be seen making a speech about how bad he is like tallis when Blair could be playing in 2015

Hopefully he is talking him up to improve his dollar value. I can't see any other reason…Well I can but if Potter is being for real I'm worried real worried!?!?!?

I was going to die from laughter when reading that Blair and Benji are the fabric of the club, they are both money hungry under performing so called superstars. Simple if you want them here then you can leave too. I don't know about other forum members but I want more players like: Farah, Fulton, Koro, Nofo and Sironen. They play with their heart.

''He's by far and away one of our best forwards and he plays accordingly.

bloody hell, I'd hate to see our worst forwards then.

Potter also said in Feb that Miller would be our half this and he'd be given every opportunity as a rookie in that role….so I dont read too much into anything he says now

...but yeh, his comments are laughable, and before some smartarse comes along with the usual ''waah - well whats he supposed to say?" line, he could be blunt, frank & honest.....he can say he wants him but he needs to improve

This is just utter bollocks.

'He's by far and away one of our best forwards and he plays accordingly.

I'm sure Potter is just talking Blair up so the Eels don't think they can dictate contract release terms with us…

My main fear with Blair is that he starts playing reasonably well as a front rower, we keep him….and then Galloway comes back so Potter shifts Blair to the backrow again where he isnt suited. Even as a lock playing tight i feel he loses his way a little. He has to stay upfront.

In that case bring him off the bench to give Galloway a breather.

I am bewildered ..its too much for me. I tagged Blair as a bad buy from day 1, not many agreed with me .but , eventually most people on this Forum and then the Sydney press could see Blair for what he is….and now the coach says this....I will watch from now on ..but it will hard to raise much passion .

Bizarre to say the least. I still do believe though if he continues in the front row he'll continue to improve and get involved.

I knew Potter was not even close to being an NRL coach but this just confirms it.

Seriously Potter we are LAST and you and Blair are the two biggest reasons for that. Not injuries and not young players.
Potter and Blair lead the way in the biggest disappointments of 2013.

How do you justify saying Potter is one of the biggest reasons we are last? He hasn't been perfect by any stretch but to blame our failures on him is just stupid for obvious reasons.

Are you dead set?
Not even super coach himself, Craig Bellamy would be able to do much with our injury crisis.

He has and is evaluating what we have and what we need, remember he inherited this roster, and has promoted promising juniors through the process.

He hasn't been given a fair chance as he has not had a full strength squad to pick from.

He's got plenty of potential in my book, and hasn't been given a fair go yet, so ease up!
