Aaron Woods is a chip off the old blocker, as in former NSW State of Origin enforcer Steve ''Blocker'' Roach. The Blues great could not help but to puff out his chest with pride when he spoke about the similarities between him and the young prop he has watched progress from a kid in the local under-14s to an NRL powerhouse.
''I was the third-youngest Origin prop to make my debut, he's the fourth,'' Roach said of Woods. ''We're both left-handed, we're both Balmain boys - it's bloody good isn't it?
''My sons Daniel, Liam and Aiden are all good mates with him, have been for years. I've seen him grow up since he played in the Leichhardt Juniors under-14s and he's tough. Will Queensland target him? He couldn't give a rat's, mate. He's hard and he's tough and then ask yourself this - who's going to take him on.
''He has natural talent. He can run, he can off-load, he has great footwork but he's always had that and the amazing thing is if you asked Aaron how he did it he couldn't tell you. He's just gifted. He's a big man, a big thick, big-boned strong man and he'll do it on his ear.''
Despite Roach's build-up, the 22-year-old - who has represented City Origin and the Prime Minister's XIII - was under no illusions of what awaited him on Wednesday night when he faces a Queensland team desperate to square the series in front of its home crowd.
''It's going to be intense, real physical I suppose,'' he said. ''There'll be niggle but that's rugby league. All I want to do when I get my role off [coach] Laurie [Daley] is to do it properly and not let anyone down.
''I don't think [it will be daunting], not really. I haven't thought too much about it. Queensland is experienced, they're a big side and we'll have to contain them up the middle because they'll be out for revenge after losing the last game.''
While Woods based his game on Jason Ryles, now playing for Melbourne, he acknowledged the role Roach had on his development and that there was some comfort in having him on the NSW Origin team's staff.
''He's always given me good advice, he's always pointed out where I can improve,'' he said. ''I can't say what the best advice I've ever received from Blocker is. If I needed to work on my tackling he tells me, he tells me the good - and the bad.''
Woods said his tough season at Wests Tigers, where he has had to carry a tough load to help compensate for the high number of injuries, had been good for his development. ''I've had to [lead by example] because we pretty much lost everybody else,'' he said. ''It's been a massive learning step.''
