Is this just a trend in the NRL where players on your team publicly declare their love for another team eg. Brandon Smith saying he wants to win with the Roosters, Laurie celebrating Penrith's win?

Is it a generational thing? I'm in my late 30s and played on a lot of teams to this point. I cannot remember a teammate ever doing this or imagine one doing it either. We'd have hated them.

Originally I thought it was a bit of a beat up on Laurie when he did it, but now I just think he's a muppet.

Reality is (in Lauries case) most of the younger players are mates with other irrespective of the team they play for. Therefore for shits and giggles theyll do anything, modern franchise sport isn't tribal, there isn't genuine animosity between sides like there might've used to. With respect to brandon, honestly i think hes a bit of a tool, couldn't care less where he ends up.

IMO what Smith did is a lot worse, from a club loyalty perspective. Laurie was a bit dumb, but just got carried away with mates, he didn't intentionally choose to go in front of the cameras and talk up another club like Cheese did.

When it first happened I was annoyed with Daine but I understand he was in the Panthers system and still would have mates out there he did get carried away a bit but Smith IMO was worse praising the Roosters like he did I get they are successful like the Storm but to be praising them like he did with still a year to go on his contract with the Storm it does leave a bad taste around him from his teammates he’ll definitely cop a lashing from Bellamy and probably some of his teammates he’ll have to work hard to get back in their good graces unless he just doesn’t care

Merely months after his current club backed him on the cocaine scandal.

Few years ago the president of my club was wearing opposition colours as his son just played for them in juniors. As a parent I understood but surprisingly it was the 19-22yr olds that had the biggest problem with it. He was playing reserve grade and changed into our colours after but poor bloke really copped it on Facebook apparently.
Didn’t feel sorry for him though

At least Laurie had a connection with Penrith; Smith has none with the Roosters other than through their white powder suppliers.

I think there's a big difference.

I can see Smith getting upto some serious no good in the Eastern Suburbs. Imagine what himself and Radley will get up to. They both seem like loose units.

That Gen Y is not the young ones they once were. Players under 25 are the next, Gen Z.

Young people generally act dumb. Then they grow up.

Has anyone listened to the podcast to put some context around what he said? Is it that bad?

I haven’t heard it I’m just surprised it’s such a big deal
