Jack Buchanan appears to have come out of nowhere; St George Illawarra under-20s to the Wests Tigers starting front row, in doing so keeping Aaron Woods on the interchange bench.

Few predicted that. Buchanan certainly didn't.

But to try to suggest to him that he has come from nowhere would be ignoring the long journey that led to his NRL debut on Monday night. For three years, it was a journey of about 180 kilometres, from Culburra Beach to Belmore, to train and play for the Bulldogs' junior teams.

''I was doing 2½-hour one-way trips to the Bulldogs in Harold Matthews and SG Ball,'' Buchanan said. ''Five hours all round, about five days a week. That would have been about three years.''

So, three years of early rises, a 6.30am bus to school, leaving a half-hour early to head to training for 2½ to three hours, before driving home by about 11pm. Before doing it all again the next day.

''It does catch up to you, but it's all worth it,'' Buchanan said.

Buchanan joined the Tigers from the Dragons, having found his way last year in the club's under-20s squad. But with the likes of Michael Weyman, Dan Hunt, Trent Merrin and others holding up front-row spots, he saw more of an opportunity at the Tigers.

''It was an all-or-nothing season, and I was lucky enough to see an opportunity at the Tigers,'' Buchanan said. ''I've never seen myself as being a real big front-rower, so I've always based my game around fitness and just work rate. I try to always work hard for my team. That's what I try and do, work hard for your brothers.''

And he did. Buchanan, 20, was strong in his debut, even though his team was being bulldozed by Newcastle. While he was disappointed with the result, Buchanan could find more positives out of it than most.

''I'd like to say it was good, but I think people are going to remember it for the wrong reasons,'' he said. ''I loved being out there. I just wish the scoreline was different.''

well done Jack..Being at the game I took particular notice of him,he never stopped trying. Has a nice little step for a prop as well.

He's going to be a very good from rower. We just need one more.

We have one,James Gavet, wait till he returns from injury,Bell may be playing reggies with Utai and Moltzen.

You can never have enough props

Especially in this day and age where clubs seem to be putting more mobile props at lock to add even more size

I thought he was one of only a small shinning lights from last week's game.

Welcome aboard Jack.

If you put the same effort in week in week out you will become a forum favourite.

We are so desperate for props to back up Galloway and Woods.

Can not wait until Groat and Gravet back.

Would not mind a prop rotation of Buchanan and Gravet to compliment Woods and Galloway

I was very impressed. Especially considering the amount of defence the teram had to do. I haven't seen his stats from the Knights game but he got through alot of work for a rookie.

Doesn't look like he's going to be a barnstorming prop making big metres, but he'll get through plenty of hitups and win the ruck. Seems to be a good defender too.

I think he'll prove to be a better prop than Gibbs in a year or two.

There is a lot to like about Jack and his attitude on and off the field. I hope he has a stellar injury free year.
I am so proud he wears our great Wests Tigers jersey with pride.

Jack had a good first hit out given we were choking ourselves to death with cheap turnovers and poor defence. It would have been easy for a rookie to drop his head as well, but he still had a dig.

I look forward to his development progressing.

His go forward certainly will improve after another offseason or two of bulking up and first grade experience. He already has displayed an impressive motor in defence that will also improve with time.Lord knows we need it.

Quality first game from him. Good attitude.
Interesting story about all the travel he used to do to get to training, reminiscent of Heigho in his early years.

As expected his stats were right up there.
41 minutes played
12 carries for 84 metres inc. 3 tackle breaks
30 tackles made, 1 missed
1 error

The travel part shows how much he can be committed. Blokes like that tend to rise above because they worked harder over guys who get an easy ride.
