Burnout and our pre-seasons

After the Knights game... The team look emotionally and physically burnt out. To me it looks like the brutal pre-season that had us as the fittest team in the comp early on, has caught up and is costing us.

I love the idea of driving standards -- but I would gladly pass on the army camps next season if everyone is coming back and passing fitness tests. I don't think that stuff is what our team needs anymore. We need to get better at scoring points instead of carrying jerry cans from here to there with 3 hours of sleep. It's not about effort areas anymore, we just need to play better footy.

Yes. you are right. But also I am confused about it. Penrith do a camp - they are top of the ladder. I think everyone does a camp. Are we looking too much into it?

Another explanation could be the field was wet and players were sliding everywhere. The game was mostly played up the middle in a condensed version compared to if it was dry. That is why the low score and the sluggishness from both teams. That is the theory...but the burn out one sounds more plausible.

I love that you are looking for solutions. If that was a forum KPI, your manager would be happy. There are some guys that work at the club...doctors, physios, other performance staff that have taken this path - is this your professional opinion or are you just speaking as a fan?

It was a swamp mate, the first few times Tito got the ball he was on ice skates.

Makasini definitely not a mudder.

everything on here is forum dribble and professionals wouldn't be pros for long if they found were posting about the club on here. Nice try tho. Like you'd walk into a pub and ask everyone why they're drinking beer...

Wasn't just the physicality or conditions in that game. It started raining after 30 minutes. The team wasn't concentrating, marquee players just vanished, Luai not getting the the ball when he called for it. Body language all over the place. It wasn't a team coached and set up for the scale of how important that game was.

The team were flogged at the start of the season and even Benji has said so. Api has worked under Madge in his Souths heyday and he also said that it was the hardest preseason he's ever done. It was a lot. It's a lot mentally as well. A lot of the theory behind it, "fitness to make a deposit that pays you pack at the end of the year"... I'm not seeing it, they just look a bit done.

No i mean are you a doctor? Not necessarily a club doctor.

Maybe it is their mental health?...very hard to track performance for that. Because Benji talks a lot about managing load, but how do you manage the mental load? So hard.

Like I said before. You are right, so don't worry too much.

What should we do? Have you emailed the club? This is very serious and needs to be addressed.

I'm a Weber BBQ salesman. WT Board sent me here....What is your problem with people using a fan forum to talk about topics they want to talk about?? People don't need to have qualifications to have opinions on a fan forum. You don't need qualifications to post about anything online in 2026. Settle down.

If you're going to try winding me up can you make it a bit less boring?? You're got the charisma of a Justin Pascoe podcast. Maybe a bit of low and slow will lighten the load... Maybe some indirect grilling will inspire some results. You know more about Benji's load than me.

Who said I had a problem?

Maybe they should have a mid year break to freshen up,
What do you think about a quick trip to Fiji ?
Could make all the difference 😂

I think its the additional energy they are burning trying to cover for the loss of players. When i played we would burn less energy when we were playing beside our regular teammates as you were not always overcompensating to cover the uncertainty you had with the bloke beside you in defense, and you were not always second guessing where the guy inside and outside of you was when you were looking to pass in attack. That indecisiveness and hesitation burns both physical and emotional energy. For me it was always the emotional energy that would tire me out before the physical stuff impacted my performance. Maybe its because i overthink things in general, however i do see it in this team and how they have handled the multiple injuries to key players.

I'm having trouble working out what has happened, last season the complaints were we aren't fit enough so this year we have overdone it and are suffering the consequences.

Do any of us want to change the off season we just had, the team hit the road firing and looked a top 4 side for a while, could it be put down to the training load between games as the culprit or is it just plain old fashion bad luck the injury gods struck.

Maybe we should ask Penrith how they do it?
Penrith players all stay within their lanes and execute close to perfection, they tend to hit and stick in first contact so at most they have 3 in a tackle, 2 put in an effort an 1 will slow the play the ball. We miss tackles and often have 4-5 players making an effort to get a player held. It all adds up.

The likes of Api and May look flogged now , but it might be a combination of getting on in years ( for Api) and playing too many minutes ( for both ) …

Do we go back to the alternative of a lesser offseason fitness focus, and running out of gas and leaking points most games in the last 10 minutes of every half ..

The poor results coincide with the injury toll to key players all out at once.

Depth is a bigger issue than "burn out".

We had them by the short and curlies but made too many mistakes in the second half. We were the better team for most of the game. We just can't concentrate for the full 80 mins. Toa and Makasini did not move up on that kick near the end and presented a broken line. You reap what you sow. Toa did not chase at all.
