CANBERRA BEAT WESTS TIGERS 42-26 IN TOYOTA CUP

Competition leaders Wests Tigers suffered a 42-26 loss to Canberra Raiders today in round 15 of the Toyota Cup competition at Leichhardt Oval.
Wests Tigers were boosted by the return of five-eighth Bodie Clarke from injury. Liam Ayoub dropped out of the team as did interchange player Ethan Tafili.
In a match being played in perfect conditions, Wests Tigers opened the scoring in the seventh minute when centre Jake Clarke split the defence out wide to provide an inside pass for full-back Jake Mullaney to race away to score under the posts.
Mullaney converted his own try for a 6-0 lead.
Canberra opened their account in the 21st minute when centre Drury Low crashed through three defenders to score out wide. The try was converted by winger Chris Medcalf for a 6-6 scoreline.
The Raiders were denied a try two minutes before Low crashed when winger Monikura Tikinau got a hand to the ball to knock it down.
Wests Tigers centre Tim Simona then produced a show of strength and class to beat three defenders in a 15 metre run to finish off a backline play to score out wide in the 26th minute for a 10-6 lead. Mullaney converted the try for a 12-6 lead.
A mistackled by Wests Tigers captain and lock Matt Hyland saw Canberra full-back Hayden Hodge hit a gap to offload inside to interchange player Paul Vaughan to dive over out wide. Medcalf converted the try for a 12-12 scoreline after 31 minutes.
The Raiders took the lead for the first time when Sami Sauiluma crashed his way over under the posts to score. Medcalf converted to give Canberra an 18-12 lead after 35 minutes.
The try came on the back of a mistake by the Wests Tigers when they failed to find touch from a penalty 15 metres out from their own line.
Canberra were almost over in the 38th minute only for a player to lose the ball in trying to score under the posts. The score remained 18-12 at half-time.
2nd Half
The Raiders extended their lead in the 43rd minute when winger Michael Thomas scored. Medcalf converted the try for a 24-12 lead.
It became 28-12 when Viti Baker hit a hole to crash over to score under the posts. Medcalf converted the try for a 30-12 lead after 50 minutes.
A poor attempt at a tackle on centre Drury Low by half-back Jay Florimo saw Low race down the left wing to dive over in the corner. Medcalf failed to convert the try for a 34-12 lead after 43 minutes.
Wests Tigers opened their account in the second half when Mullaney picked up a loose pass to step past three defenders to score in the corner despite copping a high shot by the final defender.
A fight erupted after Mullaney scored,resulting in Canberra second-rower Sam Mataora and Wests Tigers hooker Pat Politoni being sin-binned for 10 minutes. The try was not converted for a 34-16 scoreline with 25 minutes remaining.
Canberra extended their lead to 36-16 through a penalty goal before Wests Tigers second-rower Joel Wisbey scored near the posts for a 36-20 scoreline.
Mullaney converted the try to make it 36-22 with nine minutes remaining.
Wests Tigers winger Limoni Kamuta got his team back to 36-26 when he crashed over to plant the ball down with one arm in the corner. Mullaney failed to convert the try.
The Raiders scored right on full-time when a grubber kick bu hooker Dean Parata bounced off the legs of Canberra half-back Sam Williams who race 85 metres to score in the corner despite being tackled by a desperate Mullaney on the line.
Medcalf converted the try to give the Raiders a 42-26 victory in front of a packed Leichhardt Oval.
