Ben Cousins: ex-Eagle reportedly in mental care after allegedly being caught at SAS barracks
Date March 15, 2015 - 10:34PM

Former West Coast Eagles captain Ben Cousins is reportedly at a mental health facility after being caught behind the secure fences of an SAS base. The Nine Network reported on Sunday night that the ex-AFL star was apprehended at the Campbell Barracks in Swanbourne about 11pm on Saturday.
He is currently being assessed in the mental health ward at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, the network says.

Last week, the premiership player was charged after allegedly being caught driving recklessly and refusing to give a breath test.

Fair result I think. Sure he's a serial ratbag on the piss but this game has set a precedent letting other serial dickheads like Bird and Lui back into the game.

Moreover, sacking a bloke for pissing in his own mouth when you've let him back into the game after leading cops on a car chase, setting a bloke on fire and pissing on someone else shows the gross inconsistency in the way the game punishes players for idiotic behaviour. It's like walking free on a murder charge and then being gaoled for 25 years for jaywalking.

I dunno mate, it's not about the punishment for the one crime, it's about the length of his rap sheet. Cronulla would have had very stringent good-behaviour clauses written into his contract, based on his very long and sordid history.

Sure it's just one more idiotic event, he hasn't clocked a woman or been caught selling drugs, but there are only so many repeat offences the clubs and NRL can manage.

Fair points Jirskyr. I just think they should have punted him after any one of those three major indiscretions I mentioned. Just think it is ordinary to have those go through to the keeper only to be sacked for playing silly buggers in a bathroom when the only person he's hurting is himself.

By this logic, if Bird is convicted for the cocaine drama, he should be allowed back in the game, but if we ever see him piss on a wall somewhere he should be sacked and farmed off to the ESL post haste.

In the end Carney has hurt no one but himself, he is the one exiled in France, being an old timer myself, brought up on old rules, I hope he has hurt his "mate" who uploaded the photo.
Being an Aussie bloke who can't handle the drink does not make him unique

I disagree that 'he has hurt no one but himself'

In my opinion, he is damning for the reputation/image of NRL.

My first reaction to when Cronulla sacked him, was they were simply looking to free up some Salary Cap space…

I'm glad he has taken this further to send a message to the clubs.

Should he come back to the NRL? Well, thats really up to him. He is a known idiot, marked man whenever out having a social life. If he is getting good coin in the UK, stay there I reckon!

Jay,
Did you read all my post, what "mate" would be taking a photo of your private parts in a toilet, I guess other topline sportsmen and girls have better friends around them when on the drink.
As for the NRL and their image, they are nothing without the players, Carney's case is just an example of the NRL's quickfix , I'd rather someone piss in their own mouth than bash my daughter- mind you he was offduty as a player and therefore a private citizen

It is a subjective and futile debate anyway in my view.

Yeah this is true…but I think as a whole the fans are looking for some consistency

I'm not sure if there is a rating system or what the case is in regards to offences...is there some sort of a points system such as like judiciary against foul play

but there appears to be a lot of biased based on players standings in the game and ability

As you said with the betting example for me I believe Todd carney has lost his 1k over a ten bet period and is 10k deep and should be out of the game
However I feel that guys like bird Lui ferguson they gambled a lot more then the 10 k say 40-50k compared to what carney done over a prolonged period but aren't out of pocket
For that carney is hard done by COMPARITEVELY

yeh i agree Walter,
i was pretty much playing devils advocate by saying it is subjective how you judge what someone has done, but my opinion is that the amount of damage Carney has done to the image of RL is quite large as he has proven to be a serial offender.

i fully agree that things such as hitting a woman, let alone glassing one, are far far worse than anything Carney has done, but the fact remains he has had more than enough chances and the salient point is that he continued doing these things after surely knowing he was running out of chances.

i did make a point of saying that by being so harsh on Carney doesnt mean i dont think the others should have been dealt with comparatively easily.

it is a shame, because for all i know he could be a great guy who does dumb things when he is drunk - and i dont judge players as people, only their public image as a representative of rugby league.

equating gambling losses to public indiscretions was simply a method of illustrating the idea that doing a small thing many times CAN be seen as bad as one bad thing…

unfortunately i think part and parcel of being employed by the NRL means you are never off duty, which is the main issue, along with the terms of his contract.

its not like any other job: any average joe can do everything Carney has done and nothing is heard of it.

Wow just realised no one has started a Should we sign Carney thread,,,,, yet

Unfortunately another adornment to the game of rugby league;

Ex-NRL star Carl Webb charged in Cairns
AAP
Updated March 16, 2015, 4:03 pm

Former Queensland State of Origin star Carl Webb has been arrested in the state's far north after an alleged late-night rampage in a suburban street. Webb, 33, was arrested about 4.15am on Saturday after he allegedly spent more than an hour trying to break into homes in a quiet street in the Cairns suburb of Trinity Park. "He kicked on the front doors, he didn't get inside," a police spokesman told AAP. The former National Rugby League forward then allegedly damaged a car windscreen.

"He has climbed onto the bonnet of a vehicle, jumping up and down on it and was arrested when police arrived," the spokesman said. "So he has done a bit of damage. He was a bit agitated."

Webb, who played 186 games for the Brisbane Broncos, North Queensland Cowboys and Parramatta Eels during his 11-year career, was known for his aggressive style, particularly in 12 Origin matches for Queensland.

Webb has been charged with three counts of attempting to enter a dwelling with intent at night threatening violence and one count of wilful damage. He is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on March 31.
