Cleary bemoans Tigers' drop in NRL form
By Matt Encarnacion - 18 May 2018 — 9:29am

The Wests Tigers' sudden NRL downturn cannot be narrowed down to a single issue, according to coach Ivan Cleary.

The early-season surprise packets are in danger of falling out of the top eight for the first time this year after being shut out by Penrith 16-2 at Panthers Stadium on Thursday night. The defeat was their fourth in their past five matches, stripping Cleary's side of any momentum they gained from opening the season with five wins in six weeks. Asked whether there was a common trend in their losing run, Cleary said: "No, not really. They're all different. All different circumstances. "It was a different game tonight. They were too good. Not many teams are going to get two points up here. Next game's a different game."

Cleary bemoaned the poor kicking display from his halves, whose forwards were kept on the back foot for most of the night by a dominant Panthers pack. Bench forward Alex Twal was the only forward to crack the 100-metre mark, while Cleary also lamented the combined 22 penalties that denied any real fluency in the match. "It was the sort of game where we never really found any rhythm in our attack," he said. "We started OK, but the rush of penalties didn't allow us to find rhythm and after that, their line speed did the same. "We got to halftime and we just hadn't really found any rhythm. They just got a sense that they could smell the game from there. Second half we just spent the whole half in our end."

Pick players that will play high percentage footy. Stupid passes out of the back of the ruck and pushing passes early in the set in our own half is idiocy. What happened to the team that played for completions and field position? No coincidence that when they stuck to that and held their nerve in defence they competed in every game.

I do concede that the ET experiment must stop now too, his passing out of DH last night was abysmal.

Lets just say this.

We have had no 5/8
We have had no Fullback
We have had no Hooker

We have like 27 out of what should be a 30 man squad
We have something like 1.2 Million unused salary cap

Good defence will only get you so far. Fill the squad!!!!

And we’ve won 6 games. Not bad going.

Thats good you are happy with that. Each to their own. I see us losing games as a direct result of what ive listed.

Wasn’t this year supposed to be a write off? If so, you can’t complain about where we are sitting. Especially considering we’ve knocked off the defending premiers twice. Not bad for a team with no spine.

Stop bemoaning and start dropping.
Pretty simple.

Can you imagine cleary bemoaning? Telegraph embellishing a bit.

Im aware of that Hammer, no doubt at all its just a headline. Im just sick of Cleary talking about how this or that isnt happening. There is only one way to fix that. Talking to the media isnt it lol

BUT WHATS the use of having 1.2 million in the cap if we are struggling in 3 or 4 areas, spent the money and get some players in.

Have to wonder how some supporters made it through 2017

I didn't expect us to be in the 8 this early in 2018, but was confident we could make a good run home with a couple good mid season pick ups.

Very confident we will finish 5th-8th now and top 4 next year if Ivan make some good signings

I thought we had $700000 left before losing Suli $450K, Milne and now possibly Kev.

Name some players that you want to spend that 1.2 Million on, that are available next week!!!!

Strategy. Either by the right players, or take the cap into next year.

It is more important to target the money wisely not just spend it to make a signing, that has always been our problem money not being spent correctly

Tru. I think he's making a lot more changes than we've seen in the past though. Accountability is high. If we had Reynolds, would have been interesting to see if benji was moved to the bench.

What he said…

Do we just want to fill spots cause we can or do we want to strengthen the roster with the right players..

I'll concede 5/8 for the last six weeks and hooker. I think Thompson has been fine at fullback. Not a Slater or Teddy but solid and tough.

I agree we should fill the squad, but no point filling the squad with anybodies/nobodies. The players we want will also want to come here.

I should have been a bit clearer in saying Star players that are available.
