THE NRL slugged North Queensland coach Paul Green with a breach notice for spraying the referees after the Cowboys’ loss to Melbourne on the weekend, and the real reason for his anger has been revealed.

Green is facing a $10,000 fine after he slammed the officiating in his side’s 26-8 defeat as “the worst display of refereeing I have ever seen”. But his remarks may have had more to do with Storm duo Cameron Smith and Billy Slater than the men with the whistle.

Channel Seven rugby league journalist Josh Massoud reports Green took offence to some niggling acts from the pair, prompting his post-game explosion.

“What really got under his bonnet … are some of the niggly, grubby tactics from Melbourne. But not just Melbourne, some of their champion, so-called cleanskin players like Cameron Smith and Billy Slater,” Massoud said on Sky Sports’ Big Sports Breakfast.

“There was an elbow to the head of (Cowboys fullback) Lachlan Coote.

“Paul Green privately feels these guys are a protected species, that the referees don’t police them well enough.

“It was more the niggly stuff that he didn’t appreciate.”
 
Storm have been getting away with this for far too long.
They've introduced grubby tactics to the game.. chicken wing, grapple, wrestle etc
It has ruined the free flowing game it once was.
I've always thought the ref's should have control of the game, not these two.
Can only see this change, when they both retire…
 
Yeppers, studs and all.
Billy (goody goody good shoes) later, in a subsequent game, helped a player in a corner after a heavy tackle, held the player's head till the trainer got there to help.
As if that was of merit, he's typical Melbourne!
 
Plenty of players niggle and do "grubby" things but the difference is they get penalised and aren't media darlings like these two. I have many mates who are Broncos supporters (no surprise given I'm in Brisbane) and Queenslanders who can't stand the Storm because of what they get away with (yet they love them when they play for QLD).

I'd have no problem if they just made it a free for all without penalties. Squirrel grip anyone?

Slater has been allowed to defuse bombs with mid-air kung fu kicks for years, how they still allow that is beyond me. How is that a 'natural' movement when your foot is extended way beyond your knee.
 
I thought Massoud was some sort of RL tragic.
NO ONE in the game considers Smith and Slater as clean skins.
Absolute nothing article written by a work experience kid that Josh put his name to id suspect…

Slater didn't kick Skando…He turned his head back and stomped him..

Anyone who's seen a Slater knows it's a Grub..
 
Every player who plays elite level footy is a grub. Some are just better at it than others. I never heard Skando whine….he knew it was his fault.

Then why did Corey Parker whinge like a shortchanged prostitute when Kasiano gave him a mouthful of footwear? Ol' Cozza carried on like an old moll…....can still picture him pleading after the game "why did you do it Sam?". It was embarrassing to watch but funny at the same time.
