CONFIDENCE

Have been in NZ for a couple of weeks working on a business I own over here and watched a show that gives a round up of all NRL games called 40/20 on Sunday nite. They had Mathew Elliot on the panel and grilled him what had gone wrong with the Warriors against Eels. He said he was still scratching his head as the pre season had been fantastic, they had worked hard on defence, had trained to be less flamboyant in attack, value possession and earn the right get points. At the end he put a lot of it down to a lack of individual/team confidence as all the players were conscious of what happened last year and the team was still on a nine loss losing streak.

Apart from the trial against Parra… when I look back on the back end of last year, the Roosters/Knights games this year and the faces on some of players it makes me think that we are probably in a similar position/mindset to the Warriors at the moment.

Could be an important similarity?

We havent seen any reactions yet from the team under potter as its only round one.

We see this Sunday how they react to a pathetic rd 1 performance.

How they'll react to a loss playing well? How they'll react to a hard fought win? How they'll react to a victorius thrashing?
Its all new….I'd just love to see gradual improvement....there will be ups and downs but hopefully more ups, wecant ask too much too soon for where we are right now, which is as close to rock bottom as you wanna get
Some teams already have the basics right, we dont

Confiednce is huge, when i'm tipping, I tip the confident side that back there skill and abilities. String a couple of wins tgether and watch it grow, however with our draw, not looking like it will happen. Did anyone else notice on the current draw we play a couple of teams twice, whilst others we wont play untuil the second half. Not liking this draw, we seemed to cop the main contender 2 times, whilst some of the cellar dwellers, only once?

Tend to agree with you Ink and in some ways can see why Potter has decided to show some 'confidence' in the squad that trained together all pre season. Think it is going to take some time before the playing group's confidence improves and the only way I see they can build the confidence is by continually improving in some of the key areas like defence (forwards & backs), completion rates & penalties given on a week to week basis. Happy mentioned in another post that the best times for us were when we limited the opposition to less than 2 tries per game and used that as a platform and I agree with him.

IMO the biggest issue we have is a few players are letting the team down through their individual performances and therefore slowing the building of team confidence. There were plenty of examples of this in the Knights game and the look on the faces of the players said it all. I am hoping that peer pressure comes to the fore and the team can create an environment when an individual's under performance is not acceptable and Potter acts accordingly. And for me this has to happen sooner rather later so that there is an understanding within the playing group that if you 'let the team' down..you won't be a member of the team any longer.

Matt Elliot is a truthful character, you have to give him that. Problem is, a head coach can't really say "I don't know what's wrong, I can't figure it out". He and Daniel Anderson got sacked for exactly that reason.

Even if you are just putting out pure BS, coaches have to say "we lost because of reason X and will fix it with Y". That's why you can't really buy into to what coaches say until after they are fired.

Agreed. In many respects, we are in a similar position to Newcastle last year - a new coach with pretty much an inherited playing roster. It's taken Bennett all of last season (and it's probably still a work in progress), to get his players playing the way he wants them to. A new system, structures, and learning to have confidence in the new coach takes time to instill in the players. And when the team is under the pump, the natural reaction is to revert to the old and the familiar. I'm not expecting too much this year - plenty of inconsistent performances but hopefully gradual improvement through the year. Anything more than that and I'll be ecstatic!
