COREY HOPS ON HIS BIKE
Thursday, September 10, 2009

Wests Tigers forward Corey Payne will ride a bike in New York’s Central Park next week in preparation for a special charity event.

Payne heads to New York tomorrow (Friday, September 11) for a holiday after a grueling season in the NRL.

In between taking in a Yankees baseball game, a New York Rangers ice hockey match, and a Broadway Show, Corey will be hiring a bike to maintain his fitness in preparation for the ‘1200Kms For Kids’ charity bike ride from Brisbane to Sydney from October 11-16.

Corey is just one of 20 dedicated cyclists who will depart from the Royal Children's Hospital Brisbane on October 11 and over five days, ride down the east coast of New South Wales to the Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick.

Their mission is to raise $100,000 to help seriously ill children. Corey’s individual goal is to raise $3000 or more.

The inaugural ride in August 2006 was a huge success. Over the past two years the ‘1200kmsforkids’ Charity Bike Ride has raised an amazing $145,000 for the two hospitals.

“It is certainly going to be a challenge trying to ride 1200 kilometres but it is all for a great cause,’’ Corey said.

“I have never ridden in a bike race before so that will be fun. I have been riding about 100 kilometres a week in preparation. I will have to keep it going in New York and what better place to do it than Central Park.

“Professional Rugby League is a tough sport with the training sometimes being tougher then the actual games. I hate nothing more then having to get on my bike and ride for kilometre after kilometre.

“I urge Wests Tigers members and rugby league supporters in general to get behind the 1200kmsforkids riders and support a great cause/

“No one likes to see children faced with serious illness, which at times can be as tough for the family as the child. We can help these families get through the tough times they face by supporting the 1200kmforkids event and help play a part in these children's lives by making a financial contribution that will go towards research, medical equipment and, ultimately, the care of the kids.”

Payne has been nominated by Wests Tigers for the prestigious Ken Stephens Award after an outstanding effort in raising funds for The Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH) at Randwick. He is a proud ambassador for the SCH.

Absolutely the World's nicest bloke and blows the NRL stereotype of players away. First met him about 5 years ago when he did some stuff for St George Hospital and the guy was on tap for anything at all in the way of assistance. He always makes his way to say hello and remembers peoples names etc. Top bloke.

According to another thread we are training up until grand final time.
Seems Corey's not involved in that training…
