Cows vs sea grubs

The first controversial try was ruled he had momentum & grounded it after he initial put the ball on the ground just before the try line. I wouldn't of given it a green light but i can see how the video ref awarded it on that explanation. On the second howler, it appears everyone that saw it except the two clowns in the video ref box can see Foran's hand touched the ball. What always astounds me on these calls is, it's not like a ref only having the one look at it, but they have countless replays & still get it WRONG.

Disagree on the first one mate. Sure he had momentum and he may well have ended up on or over the line but for me he clearly makes a second effort after the ball hits the ground. I also doubt he grounds at all (which funnily enough rules out a double movement!). Benefit of the doubt is more like "not sure". There was a tonne of doubt in that one! But even though I'd say no try that was at least a contentious call and I can see how it might get a green light.

As you are, I'm still baffled by the second one. Common sense would tell you the ball is probably going to head in the same direction as the momentum of the guy who touches it. Given it went 3m or so towards the Cows tryline logic would suggest it was the Manly guy who touched it.

The first one was definitely a try, even if they ruled it incorrectly. The ball was grounded before the line and then momentum slid it onto the line before he rolled over. Grazed the line = try.

The game is a farce
They say, "But players make mistakes too"

Yes they do.

But they dont have the option of attempting what theyre trying to achieve over and over and over again, in slo mo and even super slo mo….players get ONE shot, vid refs get as many as they want, and still screw up

Sadly I agree wholeheartedly. It just keeps getting worse.
I have been through many seasons of disappointment courtesy of the Tigers but I have still enjoyed the game anyway and looked forward to the finals. This season I have been left shaking my head far too often and really cant be bothered with it anymore.

Yeah i had too many doubts to agree with the first decision as well Yoss, the momentum explanation was given to Thurston after they awarded it & he was blowing up at Hayne from memory.

I don't buy the momentum argument. He falls short then uses his other hand to manipulate the grounding as he is twisted on his back. Second attempt at grounding - No try

Referees boss admits: 'We got it wrong' in Kieran Forans' hand of god' try

REFEREES boss Stuart Raper has admitted their decision to award Kieran Forans' hand of god' try last night was wrong.

The call from video referees Steve Clark and Paul Simpkins cost North Queensland their season.

Raper told The Sunday Telegraph: "It looks like it has touched Kieran Foran's hand and it was a knock on."

However, after conducting a review of the match yesterday he agreed that Manly’s Jorge Tafua’s controversial try in the second half was correct in being awarded.

"When you see Taufua's hand just before the camera goes behind the corner post the ball looks short, but then slides forward and hits the line.

"We are comfortable with that decision."

Cowboys coach Neil Henry has branded the NRL's standard of refereeing as "incompetent" in the wake of his side's semi-final loss to Manly.

The Sea Eagles will meet their old grand final foes - and last year's Battle of Brookvale protagonists - Melbourne Storm in Friday night's preliminary final at AAMI Park.

But in the meantime some deep questions will be asked at League Central this week after the finals were rocked by one of the most inexplicable of decisions since, well, the last one. There have been so many this season.

Video referees Steve Clark and Paul Simpkins somehow awarded a try to Manly winger Michael Oldfield in the 63rd minute - despite replays from every angle showing it should not have been.

Sea Eagles five-eighth Kieran Foran appeared to have knocked the ball forward while jumping up and contesting a Daly Cherry-Evans bomb with Cowboys captain Johnathan Thurston.

After replay after replay was shown, the unthinkable happened: the try was awarded on benefit of the doubt.

It came five minutes after Manly had taken a 16-12 lead through a less dubious but equally controversial try to winger Jorge Taufua, who had also been given benefit of the doubt while reaching out to score in the corner.

"My phone's going off the hook - we've been dudded," Henry fumed. "It leaves a bitter taste in our mouths because both sides deserve better than that. I'm not saying they are biased. I'd say they are incompetent, and I am not on my own there.

"Who are they accountable to? Bill Harrigan and Stuart Raper? Shane Mattiske? Nathan McGuirk? We've said all year they are not up to the mark. They don't have a feel for the game. We are a bit bitter and twisted about these decisions."

An ashen-faced Thurston could barely contain his rage as Henry delivered his measured broadside.

"Gutted," Thurston said when asked to explain how he was feeling. "I can sit here and say we had opportunities to win the game, but those decisions ... honestly, I can't justify them.".

Thurston had told referee Ben Cummins on the field that his side had been robbed after the Oldfield try have been given. Asked if that was how he was feeling now, the Maroons playmaker said: "Without a doubt. The standard of our refereeing is appalling."

For his part, Foran was adamant that he had not touched the ball.

"I didn't feel a touch at all," he said. "I was trying to get it back and (Thurston's) hand must have got there and flicked it. I jumped up for it, Johnno and I went for it at the same time and I didn't feel my hand touch it. He must've got a hand to it."

Asked if Foran had touched the ball, Thurston said: "Can't you see that on the screen? And that's what I asked him (Cummins). You just get the same answers."

Manly coach Geoff Toovey, a vocal critic of match officials all season, conceded that his side received the "rub of the green" last night. But he, too, was bemused at a decision to award a try to winger Antonio Winterstein just after halftime following a terrible call from Cummins and Shayne Hayne.

Trailing 12-6 at halftime, the Cowboys took full advantage from a call that Taufua had lost the ball. As the scrum packed, replays clearly showed that Ashley Graham had knocked it from his grasp.

"It might be wrong but we can't change it," Cummins said to a furious Manly captain Jamie Lyon, who played outstandingly despite his troublesome calf injury.

Said Toovey afterwards: "We didn't get the rub of the green in the first half. What about when there's a strip and they score their try (to Winterstein). When it's so obvious, it's frustrating."

Fat lot of good that does the Cowboys today. I've never been overly worried about the refs and video refs until this year. I don't get it, they watch the same replays as us, they see the same thing, but still consistently get it wrong. Harrigan and Raper both HAVE to go, it's ridiculous.

Correct and they will still assist Manly. Clark and his mate will miss next week, but then return with their doubts and video ref the GF with Manly.

It's interesting, a couple weeks ago we were gutted about our controversial loss against Bulldogs that some admittedly suggested that it "cost" us our season. But in hindsight now, we can have some closure on the subject after witnessing the Cowboys actually lose their season due to the same reasons.
Could be a good thing that we didn't make it to the finals to only be cut after shocking refereeing calls.

Geez BT you're having a good time aren't you? I can't even pick me nose at the moment

If Toovey ever blows up about a ref again he is kidding himself.

Ah what does it matter, he will have a sulk when Melbourne knock them over next week.

Yes it's inconceivable isn't it? I think the refs made better decisions before the 'benefit' of video replays. There's something really wrong going on up there in the video box. Either they're on the take or on the piss - they are the only explanations I can think of for their ineptness at something which has been made so much simpler for them.
