Cricket Season Thread

The Poms have their Willey out tonight, scored 15 off 5 balls and has 2/16 after 5 overs. Of these two teams I’d say
England’s Willey is bigger, sorry better than usual.
 
Selection problems for semi final
Assume Warner ,Head , Marsh and Maxwell are a lock as are
Cummings ,Starc , Zampa and Hazelwood . That's 8 who are the other 3 ?
Inglis replaced Carey who played once for a duck and plays across the line but Inglis played 8 matches batted 7 times for 5 failures out of 7 averaging 18 and SR 110 . Neither is appealing .
Smith ave 38 SR 88
Marnus ave 36 SR 78
Stoinis ave 21 SR 111
Can only pick 2 of these 3 ?
For me Marnus is necessary for his fielding which is worth 50 runs alone .
Smith I guess gives a bit of security but doesn't light up the place these days either with the bat or in the field
Stoinis gives extra bowling option but if someone has to miss out I guess its him with Maxxy , Head and Marsh to cover 5th ,6th ,7th bowler
Opinions anyone ?

My thoughts are the same as yours but before the tournament started i would have had Stoinis ahead of Marsh but certainly not now

Agree. I can’t see them going back to Carey at this stage so Inglis is in. Marnus is a must his batting is ok but his fielding is on fire. As you say it’s between the Run Smith and Stoinis, I’d check pitch, weather and fitness and decide then. But I would struggle to leave a legend like the Run Smith out of any WC Finals, champions have away of showing up in the big games.
I have heard Ricky talk about using Stoinis as an opening swing bowler, I like this idea, Stoin can swing. But you would’ve needed to try it out in a game like against Bangers yesterday and I’m not sure Patty has the captaincy nuts for that kind of thing just yet, it would be a brave move to do it in a semi. We really need Starcy back in peak form taking that wicket in his first over, but he’s been off line bowling too many wides. Hopefully the day off fixed him.

I was never leaving Boggy out but I was leaving Marnus at home at one stage, he’d been struggling with the bat, but he played himself back into the team just before the WC and has been good with great fielding.

Agree Stoinis out but if its a totally lifeless wicket and it's a boundary hitting competition maybe Smith out
Also Starc pitches up looking for swing but if it doesn't please Starc pull the length back . He's essential and a point of difference but hope his radar been fixed
 
Smith and Labuschagne have been quite underhwleming in ODIs from memory.

Very tempting to drop one of them for Stoinis but that would be too ballsy a call.

If the openers don't fire ( which is likely) and Australia is batting first, we have to rely heavily on Maxwell for the SR. I don't know if on these batting friendly pitches you can afford to have more than one anchor.

Yeah as soon as it’s not swinging he should revert back to hitting top of off. He can bowl a nice ball in that area too. He’s been a little predictable.

So 4 out of 10 make semis but those same 4 top all the lists of individual performance
Given we have a few " superstars " on their day .Warner ,Head , Marsh ,Maxwell and Zampa and even Starc if he can fix his radar. Then if they have ON days we should win the World Cup
India also are tough opponent given they don't seem to have any chinks in their armour!

Knockout is a complete new level of mental toughness compared to what they have had so far.We are not under as much pressure as India and South Africa imho
