Did you check his last ashes game?Last WTC final in 2023 at the Oval
Boland 5 wickets
Fair comment but I also can't see what Green is doingDid you check his last ashes game?
During the 2023 Ashes tour to England, Boland returned best figures of 1 for 60 and only played in 2 tests.
Anyway I like Bolo too, so don’t wanna be bashing him either, Hazo had a rough game and sure this time maybe Bolo would have been handy. But I don’t reckon Hazo is top of the problem list. I reckon you’re correct with our numbers 1,2, 3, and Lyon. These positions should have been used to blood newbies a year ago.
The way they have transitioned Konstas into this team is nothing short of bewildering. They pick him when we’re under pressure he does well, then ok, and they drop him to the pine, which I sorta get to have him playing in every game possible but then not to bring him back into the side to have him ready for the WTC was poor planning and they obviously didn’t wanna throw him into the final underdone and inexperienced so they use Marnus as an opener. Who hasn’t looked like a batsman in 2 years. But this all goes back to letting Smith open. The selectors should have said no and picked a couple of openers to blood.
Marnus should have been drop back then as well to blood a number 3.
Number 3 should be your best and most technically sound bat. How we go into a GF with a bloke coming back from injury, who sure has some current form in England, but is still obviously not fully fit if he can’t bowl. Before the game I was going with the selectors thinking he must be fit as he’s scoring plenty of runs over there, selectors must know he’s good to go. That was my mistake assuming the same selectors that have botch the last few years would make the right call.
Lyon is done. Should have been tapped. We have blooded two spinners who have both taken some wickets while he was injured, but the biggest problem with bringing on a new spinner, is Pat doesn’t know how to use them. At the moment I think he feels comfortable with Lyon as he has experience and knows how to set his field. But I don’t see Pat knowing how to use his different spin options like AB, Tubby or Waugh did, and it shows. He needed to bowl spin in that last game to win it, but was not confident in Murphy and wait to long and then we did have enough runs to use him. The next couple of years we will have to make these changes it gunna be tough times, I reckon Pat needs Tubby in his pocket to help him with his captaincy of spin bowling.
I would be replacing the selectors before I made any other changes. Actually I think we can sack Marnus first.
I’m going to the Ashes with a Pom, so I can’t afford to lose. They need to sort it out asap.Fair comment but I also can't see what Green is doing
He was to be our No 6 allrounder ,well he's producing zip !
I know he might be rusty but he's a terrible starter and he's not a No 3 a position usually held by our best batsman
In general the selectors have to do a serious rethink !
At the moment the " no brainer " selections are
Konstas , Smith ,Head , Carey, Cummins , Starc
That's only 6 !
Who are the other 5 ?
Candidates .Kwajaja , Inglis , Lyon , Kunneman , Murphy , Boland ,
+ some new blood with great 1st class form .
Don't care if they experiment in the Carribean but come the 1st Ashes test we must have a team of 11 where everyone is in great form .
Yes please Mr Bailey & CoI’m going to the Ashes with a Pom, so I can’t afford to lose. They need to sort it out asap.
I shuddered at the thought.Yes please Mr Bailey & Co
They need to pick the best
Imagine the horror , if we lose ,it would be like your locked in a room with Stuard Broad LOL
We are a handful short of a full deck of super talented cricketers to retain the ashesI shuddered at the thought.
He hasn’t had much to brag about my mate, he’ll be sitting with a bunch of Ozzie’s and will take great delight with a few digs if we lose.
I don’t have confidence in Bailey and Ronald, or Pat’s ability to captain an inexperienced spinner. I would have thought Smith could have helped there but 🤷♂️.
I see a lot of ageing and/or out of form players, and no clear progression plan. Even when a bloke is bashing the door down, it’s like the door has to hit them in the face before they pick him, and then give mixed signals.
Poor old Nathan McSweeny last year, instead of picking the in form opener they pick a bloke out of position. Sure he had some recent form but he couldn’t open a can of pineapple, (you know the ones with a ring-pull). There are certain positions in a cricket team that are specialists, wicket keeper, opening bowler and opening batsman. It was like trying to turn Benji into a 7.
Had they at the start of last season, dropped Marnus, Marsh, and replaced them with McS and Webster, and Konstas in for Warner, all three would’ve had two test series with the team. Maybe McS would still be there scoring, maybe not, but the way he was used and discarded was amateurish with no thought into the future.
Will be interesting to see where they go from here, bcoz you could look at it like this - “we made the WTC two seasons in a row, and only just came second, so we’re doing great, let’s pat our back”.
The windies should be used as trial games for the ashes as there aren’t too many other opportunities between now and then from memory. We are a handful short of a full deck of super talented cricketers to retain the ashes
Selectors need to look for and find a few guys that stand out and are a cut above
With batting its a few with elite hand/eye coordination imo Konstas is one
Need to find a couple more with bowling its ability to swing the ball and keep that seam upright to get movement off the deck
Imo - we already have about 7 or 8 already in the squad who fit these definitions
Need 2 or 3 more future stars .
Cant use the same 12 from last summer
Happy to use the Windies tour to "cut and paste " so come November we have the squad that whitewashes the poms by 5-0 !
That's my dream
Just watched highlights of 5th test Jan this yearEasy in hind sight.
Just remind yourself and google Bolands last game for Oz in Pomland. I was surprised he was even on the plane but then they were stupid enough to keep sending Lil Davy.
Hazo has been good for us for a long time and in Poland, sure he’s been light on for wickets on a bowling pitch for two days, but I reckon there’s a few others I’d replace before him that would have made a difference, like our 1, 2, and 3, and our spinner.
Yeah I’d be giving Bolo every game in WI and I’d happily rest Starc and Pat to have a look at the next Gen, not that I’m writing Hazo off, bcoz I’ve seen these other bowlers have their ups and downs but Hazo is consistent. Consistency doesn’t always win though.Just watched highlights of 5th test Jan this year
Boland got 10 wickets and MOM
to go with his 5 wickets in last WTC final vs India in Pomland
These are more recent than his work in Ashes over there
Not to mention his 6-7 vs poms in 4th test 28th Dec 2021
I concede BF since his super effort Jan this year he probably hasn't done much
But not sure Hazo has either
However I think Starc and Capt Pat are as good as ever so I guess the 3rd pacer comes down to who is in best form NOW
Probably give both Bolo and Hazo a run in Carribean to see .
Re Lyon he is better on high bounce wickets like Gabba but keen on getting one of our fringe spinners to shine . Would be great to have a wrist spinner with big leggies and top spinning zooters ( im just dreaming a bit here )
Just some of my thoughts BF
Don't want Bailey and co to say " let's just stick to what's worked in the past" with little thought process !
Agree with commentsYeah I’d be giving Bolo every game in WI and I’d happily rest Starc and Pat to have a look at the next Gen, not that I’m writing Hazo off, bcoz I’ve seen these other bowlers have their ups and downs but Hazo is consistent. Consistency doesn’t always win though.
Lyon; I was thinking about this fekking goat 🐐 last night and the next Gen, and how to blood them and I was thinking the same as you, I think? Horses for courses, Lyon plays where he gets bounce, Perth I knew was his best, I checked Perth 20, SA 25, Gab 28, MCG 32, and SCG 40. I’d be giving him Perth and SA, and I’d be giving Murphy and Kun a game each, where they are best suited, with the winner playing SCG. or something like that.
Inglis needs to be at least in the squad to keep the pressure on Carey.
Batting line up going to be a tricky one. I don’t reckon they are taking any newbie’s to WI to blood so I guess Sheild form will be the gauge. But they seriously need a 1,2 &3 asap. With at least one of them being experienced, which is why Uzy’s form is an issue. We really are relying on him for that at the top. I think that 200 in Sri Lanka was one of those innings an old legend with experience can pull out on their way out that deceives everyone into thinking they are back in form when really they should have retired long ago.
Lots of issues to sort out, I wish it was my job. How much fun would that be. 😎
I’m going again this year.Agree with comments
Re Inglis he's almost a good enough batsman to make the team whether he keeps or not
Basically we don't want selectors to pick and stick without real evaluation of current form .Lyon is a No in Sydney and Melbourne
I am not sure what happened there?I’m going again this year.
