Cricket Season Thread

We will remember them.

Players and match officials came together this morning for a minutes silence to pay respect this Rememberance Day.
Prior the minutes silence, Sam Konstas acknowledged the courage, service and sacrifice of all who have served our nation.

Lest we forget.

Five of Australia's first Test Ashes squad have finished their final tune up in the Sheffield Shield.

A low scoring match in Hobart saw runs tough to come by, with Carey's first-innings 59 the second highest score of the match, and five-wicket hauls to Webster and Doggett.

South Australia eventually beat Tasmania by three wickets, chasing down 219

Get your head around this
VIC beat NSW by a mere 300 runs !
But Steve Smith batting average for the match is 113 !
Scores 57 and 56 not out
Everyone else averaged low single digits
2nd best Konstas with 12 and 27 ave 19.5
NSW batting dreadful
To top it off Hazelwood gets hammy issue as does Abbott

Not good news for Hazo ....gonna be tough getting a near full strength bowling squad through the summer

100 the game before. He first 50 he looked good to, I didn’t see today’s hit.
Poms better bring their sunscreen, he’s gunna make em use it one last time.

So far our test squad notable shield pluses
Smith 2 digs 113 runs ave 113
Marnus a 50 plus gets run out
Green a wicket and 91 not so far ( only bowled 8 overs ??)
Webster exceptional with the ball not so much with the bat
Starc and Lyon 5-6 wickets each
Doggett a handy 5 for
Carey a 2nd innings 50
Kwajaja did not play
Weatherald didn't show much
Head a double fail ( out twice to Webster
Boland bowled exceptional

Based on latest form my team
Kwajaja
Green
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Webster
Carey
Starc
Lyon
Boland
Hazelwood or Doggett ( depending on Hazo hammy fitness )

If Doggett in he bats either 8 or 9
If Weatherald plays he opens moving Green to Websters spot
Who misses out .
So its either Weatherald or Webster but not both

I don’t think they will open with green.
They will open with Marnus

Very interesting scenarios to play out here.

I mean last year we picked McSweeney to open based on the philosophy that he was at the time one of our 6 best betters but he was a No.3 and we all know how that went when he went to open.

This year Weatherald has probably been the best opener in Shield for a little while (except Renshaws been solid this season) but he’s not doing anything incredible so do we again risk putting a non-opener to open?

If Webster had no form then you could easily put Green in for Webster but he just took like 8 wickets except he only took 1 wicket in the other game and his batting has been very poor so I might just do that.

Hazlewood is another interesting one. Has an injury not sure of severity but also only took 1 wicket in NSW vs VIC and to be honest I’ve kind of been off Hazo for a while as I think Scotty is much better. Anyway, Hazo is injury prone and when there is a slight niggle it normally doesn’t end well mid-game.

I think for Test 1 I’d go with
Khawaja
Weatherald (Give him 2 games and if doesn’t have one significant innings goodbye)
Marnus (he’s the form player in shield at 3)
Smith
Head (purely on his previous ability on the test arena)
Green
Carey
Starc
Lyon
Doggett (can he bat???)
Boland
12th: Webster.

If I get at least the bowlers correct Brendan Doggett will become the 5th Indigenous Australian (3rd male) to play test cricket in almost 150 years and it will be the FIRST EVER time a Test side has consisted of 2 or more Indigenous Australians.

Got to give Jake a go, attacking opening batsmen with good technique, hopefully will go alright. Renshaw has averaged 30 for last 2 years but getting better which is good. That young Victorian opener is the future I think, looks to have a very sound technique and patient. Highly rated down south.
