Cricket Season Thread

Special shout out to Mitch Starc as he played 5 tests on the trot and on day 4 of the 5th test he was still bowling ball after ball at speeds well into the 140 kph +
He must be tired but his fitness is remarkable
He has given up millions in Franchise T 20 cricket to dedicate himself to Australia test duties
He is retired from T 20 so won't be part of the T20 world cup next month
Can look forward to some golf and I hear he's pretty good at it as is his wife
Alyssa Healy is a gun golfer plays off 2 at Long Reef golf club and has won the club championship

In the end a comfortable 5 wicket win
Win series 4 -1 ( even 2-2 ) would have retained the Ashes
Cam Green finally stood up in the end
England only win was on a terrible unsatisfactory MCG pitch .
Point is England cant expect to win when we got 567 in the 1st innings
No Hazelwood ,Cummins 1 test only ,Lyon 1 test only
Lost 4 out of tosses
Barmy Army are incredible day after day cheering their team on like they are world beaters and they are not
Imo India last summer were a more difficult opponent
They thrashed us in the 1st test 2nd test a washout ,then 3 in a row but we had our 1st choice bowling attack .
Needed to be 4-1 as opposition this year a bit weaker
We are well placed on the WTC table for 2025 -2027 test championship
Played 8 won 7 lost 1
8 months break then Bangladesh

The Barmy Army have to put a.positive spin on it ie: pretending theyre enjoying themselves.....theye all saved for years spending 10s of thousands of quid on a 6 week tour thats been a nightmare for them...at least they got 5 days here ...lol

Well my man of the match for this test was whoever the SCG Curator is. Brilliant pitch for 5 days of Test cricket, a good contest between bat and ball and thankfully Australia came out as victors.

Here is my post ashes report card.

A (Practically flawless)
- Head - 3 centuries, enough said!
- Carey - Ridiculous keeping and strong contributions with the bat.
- Starc. Phenomenal with the ball and bat to begin the series. Not as deadly last few games but still churning out 145kph and taking wickets.

B (Above average)
- Boland - Thought he bowled really well and put a lot of pressure on the batsmen which probably contributed to a few other bowlers wickets
- Smith - fielding superb, good captaincy and high average
- Neser - B-minus for me. Took many wickets but generally looked quite unthreatening for large parts. Wasn't great in 2nd innings of last 2 tests.
- Webster - B-minus because only one game but showed the goods
- Cummins - B-minus purely because only one game. Played pretty well though, hopefully he's back soon as he's a big upgrade on Neser.

C (Pass mark)
- Richardson - One game, showed his quality with the ball though. Hope he finds some consistency in the team at some point.
- Lyon - Good contribution in Adelaide unfortunately got injured.

D (Needed to lift, spot on shaky ground)
- Marnus - Some promising innings but never went on with it.
- Khawaja - Good innings in Adelaide and first innings in Melbourne where he stuck around for a while but was clear to see he needed to retire. Grateful for all his contributions to the Test team over the years though.
- Weatherald - D-minus, perhaps controversial but he showed some good glimpses and got to a start most times but never really went on with it. Would probably drop him depending on how the remaining shield season goes.

E (Please go)
- Green - Ok well I thought this guy showed a lot of promise in some innings but then he just gets out in the most stupid way possible each time. Dropped quite a few catches and bowling was not that threatening and quite expensive. Needs to be dropped.
- Inglis - Good run out but was quite poor with the bat.
- Doggett - Maybe a bit harsh but just never clicked. He'd been really good in Shield then was quite ineffective at Test Level. Hopefully he can come back stronger though.

Did I miss anyone?

To me the series was disappointing, maybe I got sucked in by all the hype prior to test one, but I thought both teams were well below the standard I expected. In the end basically Head and Starc were the difference. Our bowling attack probably got a 7 out of ten rating and our batting 5.

I guess to win 4 to 1 is a good effort but maybe it’s a sign of where test cricket is today

I thought a bit more than a good effort with most of our regular attack out for most of the series
Won 1 8 wickets Won 2 8 wickets Won 3 82 runs Won 5 5 wickets
Lost 4 4 wickets on a highly unsatisfactory pitch .
If we were below standard ? What does that say about the English ?

Idk if Australia won the key moments or if England blew themselves up with C4. The Poms arrogance cost them big time. If this series isn’t the proof they need to adjust their attitude and style, I’m not sure what will be. I have heard whispers that the ECB will demand change from McCullum and how he goes about things if he wants to stay in the job. I’d say this could hold them in good stead for when they come back in four years, but I think that every time they lose heavily here. Like I said earlier in the series, it’s ingrained in them. They don’t have the mental toughness to win here like other countries do

As for the Aussies, this could be the last home Ashes series for a few. Smith, Lyon, Starc etc. I thought Head might drop down the order again, but if there are no openers beating down the door, and Weatherald not really doing much, he may have to stay where he is.

win lose or draw it would be a great trip, cricket and pints
Aussies do not have anything like the barmy army

I admire their resilience but I'm glad we don't have anything like the barmy army just plenty of dress up groups just having fun
I'm just not a fan of excessive flag waving nationalism incl here or anywhere
But that's just me .
I lived for a while in the USA many years ago and most houses had flag poles and schools everyday the oath of allegiance with hand on their hearts .

The Poms were terrible in batting bowling and fielding. Maybe if they picked Bethel and Tongue from test one they may have been more competitive
