Defence and Discipline - our achillies heels for many many years.

The class of 2024 produced the worst defence in the club's history and discipline was very poor as well where we ended up beating the Roosters who are pesistent yearly worst offenders. Our 16 sinbins, 35 judiciary charges with 31 convictions, $32.5K in fines and 28 weeks of suspensions was worst in the league by some margin. Both areas hamstrung the squad and heavily contributed to the three peat of spoons.

Its an area Id like to keep an eye on this year and after 2 rounds, here is where we stand:

Defence wise, we are going ok but certainly in need of improvement in a few areas.

Discipline wise, we have been doing a lot better ths year. We are leading the penalty count, but everything else is good.

Just note the 1 guilty was no one in our 1-17
Was Kit Lauliilii in a pre season game
Parra won both the pen count and 6 again count but still got thrashed
Think our discipline vastly improved this year ( so far )

Love this thank you !!!

Thanks for the stats. First time i never needed em. The proof is on the score board. Kept 2 teams to Zero. Last 2 games. But thanks for your intricacies. I mean. What makes you less worth than the official.stats team and why is your work not being noticed by the people that count? Tucker

Great work Tucker.
When you get a moment could you please tell us the number of times during the last 2 (or more)seasons a team which has missed the most tackles has won games? How many times has the winning team also missed the most tackles?
Thanks.

It does happen.
Look at Saint George v Souths on the weekend. In fact if you look at all the game stats, that was a crazy result.
Saints stats:
  • 5 tries to 4
  • 51% possession
  • 81% completion rate
  • Ran for more meters 1892m-1729m
  • Greater line breaks 7-4
  • Greater tackle breaks 31-18
  • Greater set distance 51m-40m
  • Greater kick return meters 264m-179m
  • Greater offloads 13-1
  • Better kick defusals
  • Tackle efficiency at 95%
  • Made more tackles
  • Missed less tackles 18-31
  • Had less ineffective tackles 4-21
  • Made less errors
…and despite all this, they lost the game. Sometimes one side take all their chances and the best side loses, but over the course of a whole season, it’s been proven many times that those who excelled in defensive stats are always in contention for the premiership.

Is that why Flanno was so pissed in his press conference.

D and D results post Round 3:

Defence wise, we saw improvement in a lot of areas but still struggle in others. It was another great performance locking an opponent out for 58 minutes and that is to be celebrated. Plenty of work still to do though.

Discipline wise, we continue our improvement from last season, only really struggling in the one area. We need to work on our penalties, averaging 8 a game so far is the worst in the comp, however, everything else has been pretty good so far.

Two things stand out for me
- We have got our kick-chase right over the opening 3 weeks, Knights and Dolphins both had some real threats in the back 3.
- Contact in defence is still not good enough, conceding too many PCMs, tackle breaks and Offloads. The better teams will make us pay.

We need to keep winning these early games before we come up against the better teams in the competition.

D and D results post Round 4:

Defence wise, we are beginning to slide a bit in a few areas. Happily we are up the right end of the comp for points conceeded, pressure on kickers and defusing opposition kicking. We are chasing pretty well on our kicks, conceeding fewer kick return meters than usual. Our ruck speed needs to quicken and our tackle efficiency needs to tighten. Our general tackling stats are looking poorly...allowing large set distance averages, missing a lot of tackles, not wrapping the ball up enough and not containing the attacker once engaged.

Thanks for the work Tucker. Has been clear to me that our first contact is generally weak which is leading to most of the other problems. Line speed also.
Perhaps some bigger body types, a few of our guys are lightweights, or maybe they need to make some technique improvements and take some angry pills.

Thanks @Tucker

Agree with @orange&black. We need to fix first contact or we are going to slide. If we can't, we need to improve penalties. The combination will kill us.

Top 8 is on if we can address this as our disgusting attack of recent years seems much better.
