Another chance beckons

The Newcastle Knights are one of several NRL clubs considering throwing former Penrith Panthers and Wests Tigers bad boy Daine Laurie a lifeline.

They have little room to move under their NRL salary cap, or the $350,000 ceiling on second-tier player payments, but the Knights have spoken to Laurie’s manager about the possibility of him trying to resurrect his once-promising career in Newcastle.

Laurie, who was part of Anthony Mundine’s entourage at the two-time world champion’s interim World Boxing Association junior-middleweight title fight at Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Wednesday night, played out the Newcastle Rugby League season with Macquarie Scorpions after being sacked by Penrith in June.

The Panthers showed the towering 27-year-old forward the door after a series of breaches of their code of conduct, but the Herald understands that his disciplinary record is not the main point of contention for the Knights.

‘‘He’s getting shopped around a little bit and we’re still talking to his manager. It’s where we’re at with the cap; that’s the main issue with us,’’ assistant coach Rick Stone said yesterday.

Yeah most clubs with about $300 left on their cap should be able to afford him for a season
That would include a $99 one way ticket send him anywhere bar here for when he screws up again also
Didn't realize he was 27 though

I didn't realise he was 27 either, about time he got his act together and grew up!

Should read " That would include a $99 dollar one way ticket to get him the hell out of here ticket"
Tigersrule4life is OK MrsT

Tell you what, Robert Lui's alleged indiscretions are putting Daine Lauries indiscretions into perspective…

Agree, Happy. Wasn't knocking him, just comparing posts. There's one thing I always get from his posts, and that's his enthusiasm and love for the Tigers.

maybe Daine Laurie needs a coach like wayne bennett to bring out the best in him.
or is he just going to be another footy player who in years to come, wishes he could turn back time and be given the opportunity again, make the most of it.

The thing that annoys me the most is that his former association with us is still noted by the media…

What happens when Taumata gets signed again? "Former Storm, Broncos, Bulldogs, Roosters, Tigers, Cowboys and Pamfers bad boy Arana Taumata has been signed by..."

In thier defense… Most of his NRL career has been played with us!!
And we are the ones who found him, So in one way or another... So good or bad...
He will always be linked to us.
Unless he wins a premiership with the knights next year, Which will be difficult
considering the Tiges are a sure thing to take it out.
