She was the modern day equivalent of Phar Lap.It surprises me how many people care.
Even people who don’t punt?
Sure it’s a beautiful animal and no one likes the death of animals, but they are just things to bet on.
Am I missing something?
Firstly I punt, and followed the horse game closely at different times. She was the modern day equivalent of Phar Lap.
She is a part of Australian sporting folklore.
A perfect champion that Australians embraced. She always raced the best and was never beaten
A star who transcended the sport she dominated…as you noted, even non punters were aware of her.
This stuff very rarely happens and she was one of ours. She was very special.
As an Australian and a sporting fan …..Yes, you have missed something.
There’s more than 10,000 horses bred for about 3000 races per year. They don’t care. But people carry on over the death of a good one, and I’d bet a lot never even backed her.Bred to death (9 foals in 10 years) by the sounds of things.
So about on par for the racing 'industry' in terms of animal cruelty.
Mate, Phar Lap was a champion and brought many people - even non punters a lot of joy in a time when things were very very bleak. The depression.Firstly I punt, and followed the horse game closely at different times.
Phar Lap?
I don’t think you can say “Australians embraced her”, no. But through the media a lot of people know the name.
The horse did not “Transcend anything” did you read that in the DT?
She did dominate for 20 odd races and the week later we had Winx, and they’ll breed another.
Well, I’m glad for ya if you’re embarrassing it.
Did you ever back her?
Yeah I know Phar Lap, the ? was about the comparison to Black Cav.Mate, Phar Lap was a champion and brought many people - even non punters a lot of joy in a time when things were very very bleak. The depression.
Many didnt have much to be happy about but following that horse did.
I read about BC yesterday... 1 day shy of her 18th birthday
Would only have been worthwile backing her at her first couple of starts.... Always super shortThere’s more than 10,000 horses bred for about 3000 races per year. They don’t care. But people carry on over the death of a good one, and I’d bet a lot never even backed her.
Each to their own though.
Can't wait for the Melbourne Cup - not!!! I have actively avoided horse racing my entire adult life since my grandfather was Turf Editor for a major newspaper. How many horses will die this year? They only killed 168 on Australian tracks in 2023. Care for animals is correlated to bank accounts. Cruel industry, no better than bull fighting. Arguably worse as the horses that survive are raped and tortured throughout their "retirement".
RIP BC
Pal, Chum and Clag glue need to keep up their production levels. There’s more than 10,000 horses bred for about 3000 races per year. They don’t care. But people carry on over the death of a good one, and I’d bet a lot never even backed her.
Each to their own though.
