Defence in 2019

Couple of points as well..
That try for manly in round 1 was off forward pass
Also special mention to Marsters for his try saver on the weekend also.. Outstanding work.
The team needs to and has been working together on both games and it shows.

It's been great but I'm withholding full judgment until I see how we go on a dry track.
We've handled the wet pretty well or at least better than the opposition so far, the wet allows us to compress our line which has helped us control the middle but I want to see how we go when we don't get that luxury.

Oh yes.
I believe David Nofolomo will be signing with another team soon.
See us vs Warriors in the trials and Nofo steps in so often on the wing. He is just hopeless at defense. He either needs to get it right in the reserve grade or sign with the Titans who won't realise where the problem is for 4 years.

Now, we see what real defense is made of. Grit.

I’ll do a count when I eventually watch the replay

JT is ancient history …fix your knickers

All teams employ this tactic..the Storm and Rorters excell at it..in the JT era we sucked at it because our chase often sucked

the chase is the key ..this year so far ours has been 1st class..especially in the second half against the Warriors ..Tui Vasa Shreck Big Mamowlo and Fusifrijta had no time to wind up as they were met with a wall of Black White & Gold Jumpers..

On another side note our short kicking close to the line has been good also ..I think we are yet to concede a 7 tackle set and forced quite a few line dropouts..

The warriors try was scored exactly the same way as it is scored when nofo plays. The internal defence gets it horribly wrong Marsters adjusts by going in and Fonua follows him in.This is what outside backs are taught and train to do every week

Didn't you see how many times the Warriors got outside of Fonua?

I'm not defending Nofos defense here but Fonua isn't any better and you have to remember it was wet and teams won't usually try to go around a side in wet conditions, I'm sure on a dry track we would have seen Fonua get caught out even more.

If Fonua is moving in then I want it corrected too.
Fair point.

But the warriors did not go to the outside of Fonua. They did with Nofo but they did not with Fonua. Now I dont know why, but they did not. Maybe they thought Fonua would catch them. Maybe he intimidated them. Maybe its just luck… i dont know.
Thats one step Fonua has that Nofo does not.

I would rather see Fonua work on a percieved weakness then try Nofo again on a proven weakness. MWZ took Nofo's spot because of Nofo's poor defense.
I get Nofo is a clubman, I like him but I am over us leaking 2 tries on the wing then blaming Marshall and others?!?

I get it. If your inner defense goes in, you go in to close the inside gap. But that just leaves a gap out wide.

So your opposing halfback, if they read the field. They may see a gap on the inside but they will see a large gap on the wing. No expert but it is like us painting an arrow.

Sometimes it's just too hard to counteract an opposition creation of an extra man… They can be marked up as the balls played and *boom* like magic.. extra man appears

Ink's right as soon as a player can get outside his opposing player and straightens he automatically commits the next defender

One of the best we had at it was Scott Prince , he gets on the outside , straightens and bingo ….3 on 2

The other one is getting the outside player interested ....as a defender in the backs the key is to rely on your peripheral vision and trust it ...the minute you start watching ball runner the opposing player can slip to your outside ....Kev Walters and Steve Renouf were the kings of the in out play ...he'd start his run at your inside shoulder and by the time you looked again and he would be on the outside shoulder ....Walters puts the ball in that outside gap and then it was goodnight Irene

My problem with Nofo isn't when he moves in with his inside man. Its more that he can be slow to turn and correct that. He often lays his hands on a player who is already covered. Corey is a good defensive winger despite his size because he doesn't commit to charge in every time. He holds his position well and when he decides to move he goes hard (in or out).

Not looking to flame him. Nofo seems to defend well sometimes and other times he commits to go in no matter what. When he defends well I have him in our 17 as the first winger picked.

He has been great.

Aggressive and effective with his offence and defence. He also has a big motor so he just keeps going which is better than last year as once the reserves came in we stalled. Josh and Thomas are killing it and Packer is better of the bench.
